Sedmed Attendance at the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) Conference – 3–9 July 2026

Sedmed attended the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) Conference held in Cape Town from 3 to 9 July 2026. The conference, themed “Facing Headwinds,” brought together leaders from the medical scheme, healthcare, regulatory, and healthcare technology sectors to discuss the significant challenges and opportunities facing the South African private healthcare industry.

Attendance at the conference was important as it provided Sedmed with the opportunity to remain informed of the latest legislative, regulatory, financial, and technological developments affecting medical schemes. It also enabled engagement with regulators, industry experts, healthcare providers, and service partners, ensuring that Sedmed remains aligned with emerging best practices and industry trends.

Topics covered during the conference included:

* The future implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) and its implications for medical schemes.
* The financial sustainability and resilience of medical schemes in an increasingly challenging economic environment.
* Healthcare funding reforms and regulatory developments.
* Advances in digital health, artificial intelligence, and data analytics in healthcare administration.
* Value-based healthcare and improving patient outcomes while managing costs.
* Managed care innovations and strategies to improve healthcare affordability.
* Cybersecurity, governance, fraud prevention, and risk management within the healthcare sector.
* Emerging healthcare technologies and their impact on member experience and operational efficiency.

The conference also provided valuable networking opportunities with industry stakeholders and service providers, enabling Sedmed to benchmark its practices against those of other medical schemes and identify innovative solutions that may enhance service delivery, governance, and long-term sustainability. Participation in the conference supports Sedmed’s commitment to continuous improvement and ensuring that the Scheme remains well positioned to respond proactively to changes within the healthcare funding environment.

📢 Important Update: Specialist Network Changes

Sedmed Medical Scheme would like to inform members of an important update regarding our Specialist Network.

Due to ongoing challenges in securing sufficient participation from Endocrinologists and Anaesthetists, these two disciplines have been removed from the Sedmed Network with immediate effect.

🔹 What this means for you:
• You may now consult any Endocrinologist or Anaesthetist of your choice
• The standard (non-network) benefit will apply
• Out-of-hospital services will be paid at 75%, with a 25% co-payment

🔹 Important:
• This change is not retrospective – previous claims will be processed under the rules that applied at the time of service
• All other specialist disciplines remain unchanged, and network rules and co-payments continue to apply as normal

This is an interim measure while we continue efforts to expand our specialist network. We will keep you updated on any further developments.
