From music to half marathons to magnificent art.
Come discover another side of Belinda at Echoes of Earth, opening 20 June at Gallery on Goodale. 🎨
Gallery on Goodale will host Echoes of Earth in a pop-up exhibition showcasing the work of two Bloemfontein artists, Steph Norval and Belinda van Zwijndrecht. The Opening will take place on Saturday, June 20th, and the exhibition will run through the Sunday after that: having been arranged as a short, focused community art event, with homeowner Anéa Hattingh opening the space as a supporter of local artists and the wider Bloemfontein community.
The aim is to place strong local work before the public, but especially to create an environment in which artists can be met directly, where real conversation can happen naturally and the city’s creative life can be supported and felt in a tangible way. Both artists will be present over the two days so that visitors can meet them and engage with the work in person.
Norval’s paintings have been described as colourful, fresh and innocent, but also deeply human and individual. Official posts say that his work 'resists repetition, with each painting carrying its own mood, energy and story'. As René Snyman has remarked, Norval’s paintings have the quality of making someone walk past, only to feel compelled to turn back and look again. This 'lingering effect' appears central to the appeal of his work, which seems to reveal more feeling and more meaning over time.
Van Zwijndrecht’s work moves in a more expressionistic direction, using texture, movement, form and emotion to create paintings and drawings that are immediately recognisable. Her use of unexpected colour combinations gives the work energy and visual force, while the underlying ideas often introduce a quieter seriousness - both playful and reflective, her work invites viewers to explore. By bringing Norval and Van Zwijndrecht together, Echoes of Earth is sure to set up a conversation between two very different artistic voices, both rooted in the same local creative ground.
