๐ŸŒธ Happy Womenโ€™s Day! ๐ŸŒธ

Today, we celebrate women in all the different seasons and stages of life. We believe that caring for women means caring for their whole wellbeing.

Womenโ€™s health is about more than pregnancy and birth. Itโ€™s about taking the time to check in with your body, ask questions, have important conversations, and look after your physical and emotional wellbeing.

In South Africa, breast cancer and cervical cancer are among the most commonly diagnosed cancers affecting women, making regular screening and early detection so important. ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

๐Ÿค World Breastfeeding Week | When Is It Time to Stop Breastfeeding?

"When should I stop breastfeeding?"

The answer may surprise you...

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends:
๐Ÿค Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life.
๐Ÿค From 6 months, introduce nutritious complementary foods while continuing to breastfeed.
๐Ÿค Continue breastfeeding for 2 years and beyond, for as long as mother and child both wish.

There is no "right" age to stop.

Some babies wean before two years, while others continue well into toddlerhood. Breastfeeding continues to provide nutrition, immune protection, comfort, and a place of connection long after the first birthday.

Whether you breastfeed for six weeks, six months, two years, or longer, every feed matters.

The most important thing is that your breastfeeding journey is one that works for both you and your baby, free from pressure, judgement, or comparison.

Every breastfeeding journey comes with questions, challenges, and special moments. We hope every mother feels supported and empowered to make the choices that are right for her family.

๐Ÿ’› There isn't a perfect time to stop. Only the time that is right for you and your child.

๐Ÿค World Breastfeeding Week | Storing Breastmilk Safely

Whether you're returning to work, expressing occasionally, or building a small freezer stash, knowing how to store breastmilk safely can help you make the most of every drop.

Current evidence-based guidelines recommend:

๐Ÿผ Freshly expressed breastmilk can be stored:
* At room temperature (up to 25ยฐC): Up to 4 hours
* In the refrigerator (4ยฐC or colder): Up to 4 days
* In the freezer (-18ยฐC or colder): Best used within 6 months, but acceptable for up to 12 months

๐Ÿ’ก A few helpful tips:
* Store milk in clean, sterile containers or breastmilk storage bags.
* Label each container with the date it was expressed.
* Freeze milk in small portions (60โ€“120 ml) to reduce waste.
* Store milk towards the back of the fridge or freezer, not in the door where temperatures fluctuate.
* Thaw frozen milk overnight in the refrigerator or by placing the container in warm water.
* Never refreeze breastmilk once it has been thawed.
* Once your baby has started drinking from a bottle of expressed milk, use it within 2 hours.
* Never warm breastmilk in the microwave.

Breastmilk is incredibly resilient and contains living cells, antibodies, and nutrients that continue to protect your baby. Storing it correctly helps preserve these remarkable qualities while keeping it safe for your little one.

๐Ÿ’› Every drop is valuable, and every mother deserves to feel confident when expressing and storing her milk.

๐Ÿค World Breastfeeding Week | More Than Just Feeding

One of the most overwhelming parts of breastfeeding isn't always the feeding itself...

It's being your baby's favourite place for comfort.

When your little one is tired, overwhelmed, frightened, unwell, or simply needs reassurance, they often want you. because your breast is so much more than food.

It is warmth.
It is safety.
It is connection.
It is comfort.

There may be days when you feel "touched out" or wonder why no one else seems able to settle your baby. Those feelings are real, and they don't make you a bad mother.

Remember: you don't have to do it all alone.

Accept help with the cooking, the laundry, or the housework. Let someone else care for you while you care for your baby.

Sometimes the best way to support a breastfeeding journey is simply to support the mother.

๐Ÿ’› Because when a mother is cared for, she is better able to care for her baby.

๐Ÿ’› World Breastfeeding Week | Every Mother Needs Support

One of the hardest parts of breastfeeding isn't always the feeding itself.

Sometimes it's the comments.

"Your baby is feeding too often."
"Maybe your milk isn't enough."
"You should give a bottle."
"You're still breastfeeding?"

It can feel like everyone has an opinion.

The truth is, every breastfeeding journey is different. What works for one mom may not work for another, and unsolicited advice can leave mothers feeling anxious, guilty, or like they're failing when they are not.

Let's choose encouragement over criticism.

๐Ÿ’› Ask how she's doing instead of telling her what she should do.
๐Ÿ’› Offer practical help instead of judgement.
๐Ÿ’› Remind her that asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Breastfeeding was never meant to be something mothers do alone.

Our midwives are here to provide evidence-based guidance, compassionate support, and a safe space to ask questions. Every mother deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported.
