🤔 WHAT’S MISSING?

You’ve been given a syringe number…

but can you actually interpret it?

SCENARIO:

You know:

✔ Syringe type: U-100
✔ Syringe marking: 20 units

QUESTION 1:

Can you know how many mg are present from that information alone?

A️⃣ YES
B️⃣ NO

QUESTION 2:

What important information is missing?

A️⃣ Syringe colour

B️⃣ Concentration

C️⃣ Needle length

D️⃣ Vial brand

Drop your answers below 👇

Q1 = A or B
Q2 = A, B, C or D

Remember:

UNITS = VOLUME

CONCENTRATION = WHAT THAT VOLUME CONTAINS

The number on the syringe is only PART of the story.

Before interpreting any syringe marking, make sure you know:

✔ Total amount in the vial
✔ Final liquid volume
✔ Concentration
✔ Syringe type

IF ONE NUMBER IS MISSING — DON’T GUESS.

🔬 HOW THE NUMBERS CONNECT

This is where everything from Week 14 comes together.

To properly understand a syringe marking, the numbers need to connect in the right order:

TOTAL AMOUNT
→ FINAL LIQUID VOLUME
→ CONCENTRATION
→ SYRINGE MARKING

Using a fictional training example:

10 mg total compound

in

2 mL liquid

gives a concentration of:

5 mg/mL

That concentration is what gives meaning to any syringe volume you look at afterward.

And this is exactly why:

UNITS ≠ MG

The unit marking tells you the volume.

The concentration tells you how much compound that volume contains.

Same syringe volume.
Different concentration.
Different amount of compound.

So before trying to interpret any syringe number, STOP & CHECK:

✔ Total amount in the vial
✔ Final liquid volume
✔ Concentration
✔ Syringe type / scale

KNOW THE VIAL.
KNOW THE VOLUME.
KNOW THE CONCENTRATION.
KNOW THE SYRINGE.

🧮 WEEK 14 — KNOW YOUR NUMBERS

UNITS ALONE DO NOT TELL YOU THE MG.

A syringe marking only tells you the volume you are measuring.

To understand how much compound is actually in that volume, you also need to know the concentration.

So the full picture looks like this:

MG
= total amount of compound

mL
= liquid volume

mg/mL
= concentration

UNITS
= syringe scale / volume marking

This is why:

❌ “20 units always means the same mg”

is false.

The SAME syringe volume can contain a DIFFERENT amount of compound if the concentration is different.

That is one of the most important lessons from this week.

THE SYRINGE SHOWS THE VOLUME.
THE CONCENTRATION TELLS YOU WHAT’S IN IT.

🤔 RECONSTITUTION QUICK CHECK

Let’s see who has been following Week 14 👇

TRAINING VIAL A:

Before:
10 mg total compound

After:
10 mg total compound in 2 mL liquid

QUESTION 1:

What changed?

A️⃣ The total amount of compound

B️⃣ The liquid volume

C️⃣ The concentration

D️⃣ Both B and C

QUESTION 2:

TRUE or FALSE?

“Adding more diluent creates more compound.”

Drop your answers below 👇

Q1 = A, B, C or D
Q2 = TRUE or FALSE

Clue:

CONCENTRATION
=
AMOUNT ÷ VOLUME

The goal this week is not to tell anyone what numbers to use.

It is to make sure people understand what the numbers actually MEAN before they rely on them.

KNOW THE VIAL.
KNOW THE VOLUME.
KNOW THE CONCENTRATION.

If one number is missing — don’t guess.

🔬 WHAT CHANGES WHEN A VIAL IS RECONSTITUTED?

Let’s follow the numbers.

Imagine a fictional training vial containing:

10 mg total compound.

That 10 mg is the AMOUNT in the vial.

Now a known liquid volume is added.

That gives us the next number:

mL = VOLUME.

Once we know both, we can understand the concentration:

CONCENTRATION
=
AMOUNT ÷ VOLUME

or:

mg ÷ mL = mg/mL

For example:

10 mg in 1 mL
= 10 mg/mL

10 mg in 2 mL
= 5 mg/mL

What changed?

✅ Liquid volume changed
✅ Concentration changed

What DIDN’T change?

✅ Total compound remained 10 mg

That’s the important distinction.

Reconstitution changes how concentrated the solution is.

It does NOT manufacture additional compound.

Before interpreting any concentration, confirm:

✔ Total amount in the vial
✔ Final liquid volume
✔ Resulting mg/mL

If you don’t know the final volume, you don’t know the concentration.

🧪 WEEK 14 — KNOW YOUR NUMBERS

ADDING MORE LIQUID
DOES NOT ADD MORE COMPOUND.

This is one of the biggest reconstitution misunderstandings.

If a vial contains 10 mg total compound, adding diluent does not somehow turn it into 20 mg.

The total amount stays:

10 mg.

What changes is the LIQUID VOLUME.

And once the liquid volume changes, the CONCENTRATION changes too.

So:

MORE DILUENT
=
MORE VOLUME

But:

MORE DILUENT
≠
MORE COMPOUND

Reconstitution simply distributes the existing amount through a known volume of liquid.

That’s why these three numbers must never be confused:

MG = total amount
mL = liquid volume
mg/mL = concentration

SAME AMOUNT.
DIFFERENT VOLUME.
DIFFERENT CONCENTRATION.

🤔 CAN YOU READ THE SYRINGE?

Quick Wednesday check 👇

On a U-100 insulin syringe, the plunger is sitting at:

20 units

QUESTION 1:

What volume is that?

A️⃣ 20 mL
B️⃣ 2 mL
C️⃣ 0.2 mL

QUESTION 2:

Does “20 units” tell you how many milligrams of compound are present?

YES or NO?

Drop your answers below 👇

Q1 = A, B or C
Q2 = YES or NO

Clue:

U-100 = 100 units per 1 mL

And remember:

To know how many mg are present, you also need to know the concentration in mg/mL.

READ THE SCALE.
KNOW THE VOLUME.
CHECK THE CONCENTRATION.

If one number is missing — don’t guess.

💉 WEEK 14 — KNOW YOUR NUMBERS

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS ON A U-100 SYRINGE ACTUALLY MEAN?

They show VOLUME.

Not milligrams.

On a standard U-100 insulin syringe:

100 units = 1 mL
50 units = 0.5 mL
10 units = 0.1 mL

That means:

❌ 10 units is NOT 10 mL
❌ units are NOT the same as mg
✅ units are markings on the syringe that represent volume

And this is the part people often miss:

The syringe can show you HOW MUCH LIQUID you are measuring.

It cannot tell you HOW MANY MG are present unless you also know the concentration.

THE SYRINGE TELLS YOU VOLUME.
NOT THE MG.

Always confirm the syringe type before interpreting the scale.

🤔 QUICK CHECK

Same amount of compound.

Different liquid volume.

Which solution is MORE concentrated?

A️⃣
10 mg in 1 mL

B️⃣
10 mg in 2 mL

Comment:

A or B? 👇

Now for the second question:

Did the TOTAL amount of compound change?

YES or NO?

Clue:

CONCENTRATION
=
AMOUNT ÷ VOLUME

The lesson here isn’t about choosing a dose.

It’s about understanding what the numbers actually mean.

Before relying on any concentration, always confirm:

✔ Amount in the vial
✔ Diluent volume
✔ Resulting concentration

If one number is missing…

DON’T GUESS.

SAME AMOUNT.
DIFFERENT VOLUME.
DIFFERENT CONCENTRATION.

13/10/2026

🔬 WHAT DOES CONCENTRATION ACTUALLY MEAN?

The simplest way to think about it is:

CONCENTRATION
=
AMOUNT ÷ VOLUME

Or:

mg ÷ mL = mg/mL

Using a fictional training example:

Training Vial A contains:
10 mg total compound

Solution A:
10 mg in 1 mL
= 10 mg/mL

Solution B:
10 mg in 2 mL
= 5 mg/mL

Both still contain the same total amount of compound:

10 mg.

The difference is how much liquid that compound is distributed through.

So:

More liquid
does NOT mean
more compound.

It means the same amount is more diluted.

That’s why concentration is so important when people are trying to understand reconstitution and syringe measurements.

AMOUNT tells you how much.
VOLUME tells you how much liquid.
CONCENTRATION connects the two.
