π‘ PREVENTING FALLS AT HOME
Small changes can make a BIG difference β€οΈ
Falls are one of the most common causes of injury among older adults. The good news is that many falls can be prevented by making the home safer and supporting safe mobility.
πΆ KEEP MOM & DAD SAFE AT HOME
βοΈ Keep walkways clear
Remove clutter, loose cables and objects that could become trip hazards.
βοΈ Secure loose rugs
Use non-slip backing or remove loose rugs altogether.
βοΈ Improve lighting
Keep hallways, stairs and bathrooms well lit. Consider night lights for trips to the bathroom.
βοΈ Install grab rails
Bathrooms, showers and toilets can be particularly hazardous. Grab rails can provide additional support.
βοΈ Use non-slip mats
Especially in bathrooms and areas that may become wet.
βοΈ Wear safe footwear
Encourage supportive, well-fitting shoes with non-slip soles β avoid walking around in loose slippers or socks.
βοΈ Take your time
Encourage your loved one to sit on the edge of the bed before standing and to avoid rushing to answer the phone or get to the bathroom.
βοΈ Check mobility aids
Walkers, canes and other mobility equipment should be appropriate for the person and correctly adjusted.
βοΈ Have regular medication reviews
Some medicines can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Speak to a healthcare professional before making any medication changes.
