The Gauteng Department of Health has reported a concerning rise in hypertension among young adults under the age of 45. Over the past year, more than 60,000 new cases of hypertension were recorded. Key contributing factors include unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Dietitians play a vital role in the prevention and management of hypertension through nutrition education, lifestyle counselling, and the promotion of healthy behavioural changes. By encouraging balanced diets, reduced salt intake, regular physical activity, healthy weight management, smoking cessation, and responsible alcohol consumption, dietitians help reduce the burden of hypertension and improve overall health outcomes within the community.
