This was 11 May 2026 in the Overstrand, the craziest weather we've had so far this year.

The wind gusts caused a lot of uprooted trees and shrubs in our garden and even snapped huge branches as if they were little twigs. The large amounts of rain caused our dam to overflow for the first time ever.

This coming week a similar frontal system is forecasted by several meteorologists. Some even predict big hail this time around.

Do keep an eye out on this weather system and prepare as much as possible. It is forecasted to influence South Africa from 2 to 6 September.

I love this time of year! We go on an exciting treasure hunt every single day - this time finding a goose egg. Their nest is very well hidden in between the kannas!

Our ducks also haven't disappointed. Even our 3 youngest ducks have started laying without any problems.

We love using our duck and goose eggs for baking, especially biscotti, which happens at least once a week. We enjoy a piece of biscotti with our morning coffee. The farm fresh eggs just add a richness in flavour to any dish.

If you're looking to buy some eggs, they are available at the Johann van der Merwe at the moment, as well as at the pop up market in Baardskeerdersbos on Saturday from 8:00 till 13:00.

While you're at it, also try our fresh lemonade and handmade natural soaps, also available at both venues.

Today was a beautiful day! The weather was perfect, the sky extra blue, the gurgling river cool and calming.

We went for a walk and enjoyed being surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.

It was great to spend quality time together. Our batteries are charged and we're ready for the new week!

How cool is this!?

Michael was so intrigued with Impaq Homeschooling 's online experiment yesterday, that we had to retry it ourselves (several times) today. And you can too!

All you need is a plate, a tealight candle, a lighter or matches, a glass and a bit of water.

First pour some water around the tealight candle in the plate. Then light the candle, cover it with the glass and watch the magic happen!

While the flame burns, it will start sucking up the water into the glass. As soon as it has used up all the oxygen in the glass, it will suck up every last drop from the plate into the glass, creating a vacuum in the glass.

Let me know if your child also finds this fascinating!

We finally have the correct colour Irlen lenses and this was Michael's experience on day 1:

Everything looks bigger!
He could distinguish between shadows and trees, where it used to look like trees only.
He was able to write more words at a time.
He read more fluently.
And the best! - he could read a question himself and was able to answer correctly, where he usually couldn't comprehend the question.
He didn't get as tired as quickly as usual.

Background info:
Michael and I were diagnosed with Irlen syndrome in February this year. I got my Irlen lenses in April and it has been life changing for me.
Michael's first lenses were not a proper fit. His lenses consist of a combination of 4 different colours, of which 2 of his first choice of colours were out with 2 shades. At our last appointment with the Irlen specialist, I couldn't believe how big a difference that makes!

If you suspect that your child has dyslexia or is struggling to concentrate or to read, I can totally recommend that you first test for Irlen syndrome. The right lenses could make all the difference.

Where it used to take so much effort to concentrate, Michael will now be able to learn and live properly! And I am so happy and thankful for that.

Essentials when we go away:

- Insect roller - for any nasty insect bites, especially in the summer
- Fever roller - roll up and down the spine to break a fever
- Pain roller - for any pain and inflammation, wherever needed
- Cold roller - roll over nose to unblock
- Digize - roll onto stomach for any digestive issues
- Ear roller - for ear pain or discomfort
- Valor roller - to use as perfume or to help with big feelings

We always take our Viya diffuser with to use in the car's cupholder. We love diffusing Thieves, Lushious Lemon and Peppermint in the car to boost everyone's immunity and to keep them fresh and focused. It doubles as a living room diffuser in our accommodation.

Diffusers in the bedrooms are a must to ensure a good night's rest. We usually diffuse lavender and KidScents Refresh or Eucalyptus, or Peace & Calming and Respiratory Care in our bedrooms.

You don't need any smart gadgets to remove an attachment from an essential oil bottle. Simply use the lid to get that last precious drop out!

I put all my empty essential oil bottles in a container with Epsom salt, which we use for a relaxing bath. After being in the Epsom salt container, I move the empty bottles to a container with vinegar, which I use as a fabric softener in the washing machine. Thereafter I wash and sterilize the empty bottles, let it airdry, and reuse it for rollers. It's just too precious to waste!

We moved into our Worcester home in July 2012. And with the home, we got a black cat called Bramble. Our house's previous owner brought her with them from Britain, when she was only a little kitten in 2006.

Bramble was the first cat I've ever had. I used to be a dog person. But slowly but surely Bramble crawled into our lives and into my heart. She was always the first one to check out what new renovations we are doing to "her" house. As if we first needed her approval.

She used to love to go on expeditions on Worcester's golf course. Someone once mentioned that they saw her catching a rabbit!

In 2013 Bramble taught our Tiger cat to catch birds and even later tolerated her on the same blanket and sharing my lap. In 2017 Bramble often used my big pregnant belly as a cushion for her head.

In 2021 Bramble moved with us to the Overstrand. She was getting old but adjusted well, spending most of her time on the back verandah enjoying the sunshine.

This year Bramble really started struggling. Even while eating well, she got very thin and frail. I took this video 2 weeks ago of Mia taking care of Bramble. Little did I know that this would be my last video of her. Exactly 2 weeks later, on 30 April, Bramble passed away.

My heart is sore, but I'll hold onto the beautiful memories. She transformed me into being a total animal lover, instead of only a dog person. Rest in peace dear old Bramble. 20 years and 4 months old, almost 14 years part of our lives, forever in my heart.
