There’s so much conversation around counselling and therapy: what happens in sessions, why you should go, and how it can help. But far less attention is given to the part before therapy begins.

How do you choose a counsellor or psychologist? What different types of psychologists are there? What should you expect in those first few sessions? What are green flags… and what should make you pause?

This series is designed to help potential clients engage with counselling and psychotherapy more meaningfully - before the process even starts ✨

Case Studies are a great way to learn how mental health professionals and psychosocial professionals fit into the greater ecosystem of wellbeing ✨

*Case studies are entirely fictional.
*In some cases, clients may be referred to other registered health professionals first.
*Always make sure your clinician is registered with HPCSA, SANC, or SACSSP.

Let me know if I’ve left anyone off the list? 😉

I shared a post like this last year, when my word was ‘embrace’

I chose it while navigating the uncertainty of applying for my master’s in Clinical Psychology. When I found out that I wasn’t accepted into the programme, I had to truly live out that word, embracing the discomfort and disappointment that came with it. What I didn’t expect was how ‘embrace’ would also lead me toward new, exciting paths and encourage me to take bold chances throughout 2025.

Looking back, I can honestly say that 2025 was the happiest and most fulfilled I’ve ever felt, and I’m hopeful that 2026 will be just as meaningful, if not more so.

For 2026, my word is ‘accept’.

There’s a DBT skill called Radical Acceptance, which teaches that acceptance doesn’t require liking or approving of something. It simply means allowing reality to be what it is. Instead of wishing fear or discomfort away (and creating more distress in the process) I want to acknowledge and accept the present moment as it stands. I know this year will bring challenges, both personally and professionally, and I’m ready to face them. In 2026, I want to anchor myself in acceptance: accepting the good, the bad, and the uncomfortable, trusting that I’m strong enough to hold it all.

What’s your word for 2026?

With documentaries like Evil Influencer showcasing just how much harm can be done by ‘mental health professionals’ who aren’t adequately trained, registered, or monitored, I felt this post was necessary.

Our role as health professionals is to educate the public so that they can be equipped to make informed decisions about their mental healthcare needs 🤍🌸
