Why do I need the πHepatitis B vaccination prior to my practical placement?
Healthcare workers and carers should get the πHepatitis B vaccination because they face a high risk of occupational exposure to infected blood and body fluids, needlestick and other sharps injuries.
What are some key reasons for the vaccination?
1. Personal Protection ππ₯½
Hepatitis B is a serious blood-borne virus that can cause acute illness or turn into a chronic infection. Chronic hepatitis B can lead to severe, life-threatening liver damage, including liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer).
2. Protecting Patients & Families ππ«
Vaccinating staff prevents them from accidentally transmitting the virus to patients during medical or care procedures, as well as to their own family members.
3. Occupational Safety & Cost-Effectiveness: π₯Όπ΅
The vaccine provides long-term, highly cost-effective protection. Once a healthcare worker confirms they are a vaccine responder (via a protective antibody blood test), they typically have life-long immune memory and do not require routine boosters or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after an exposure incident.
4. Legal & Workplace Standards βοΈ
Many global health bodies and national guidelines like the National Department of Health Guidelines in South Africa recommend or legally require employers to offer free πHepatitis B protection to staff with exposure risks.
5. Where can I get my vaccination?π
You can visit your local day hospital, Dischem, Clicks or most pharmacies that offer vaccinations.
So remember to get your vaccination prior to the start of your practical placement and ensure you give a copy of your vaccination certificate to your facillitator.
