PATA is a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation (NPO) that provides crucial support, education, training and resources to 310 paediatric HIV clinics across 24 sub-Saharan African countries. The fundamental purpose of PATA is to assist these clinics to improve the quality of healthcare they are able to provide to HIV-infected children and their families. PATA’s core activities include holding an

annual participatory, action-oriented training forum for 80-160 frontline healthcare workers to share best practices and operational strategies, conducting quality improvement training at district level, and running a task-shifting programme in 49 clinics across 15 countries. PATA also mentors and up-skills clinics throughout the year to manage self-initiated quality improvement projects. PATA maintains contact with clinic teams throughout the year through our newsletter and website www.teampata.org (a platform for sharing electronic resources such as the PATA proceedings, the written output of the annual forum). The PATA network promotes team exchanges, resource sharing, task-shifting and the involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS in the clinic. The PATA office is advised by a 13-member Steering Committee of leading practitioners who meet bimonthly to direct PATA's strategy, programmes and operations.

Looking healthy does not always mean everything is okay...
For more than a year, 10-year-old Nkosizile had been out of care. Behind her absence were financial barriers and a family who believed that, because she appeared healthy, she no longer needed HIV treatment.
Nkosizile’s story shows why strong collaboration between healthcare facilities and communities is essential. Healthcare providers cannot always see the barriers children and families face beyond the facility. By working alongside peer supporters and other community-based healthcare workers, they can better understand these barriers and reach children who might otherwise be missed.

What did tell us about the future of the HIV response?

For us, the answer is clear: innovation alone is not enough. Equity, access and community leadership must be at the centre.

From paediatric treatment gaps and Advanced HIV Disease to the growing threat of funding cuts, AIDS 2026 highlighted the urgent need to rethink how we finance and deliver HIV services.

We must rethink how resources are allocated, rebuild resilient and integrated health systems, and rise together by ensuring that children, adolescents, youth, families and underserved communities are never left behind.

On 5 August, Eastern Cape Health Promotion Practitioners gathered in Kugompo for an orientation session on HIV prevention options, including pre-exposure prophylaxis ( ), post-exposure prophylaxis ( ), and HIV self-screening ( ).

The session formed part of the build-up activities for the official launch of injectable PrEP, , and was proud to be part of this important milestone. Our Technical Advisor, Yoliswa Sambela, as a member of the Provincial Prevention Technical Working Group, joined the facilitation team, providing an opportunity to share the great work HIVE is doing to strengthen prevention of vertical transmission (VTP) services in Chris Hani District.

Together, we continue to support healthcare providers with the knowledge and tools they need to expand HIV prevention options and strengthen services for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

PATA is looking forward to joining the 10th International Workshop on Adolescence, SRHR & HIV 2026 in Bangkok. The workshop will explore the evidence, innovations and practical approaches needed to strengthen HIV and SRHR services for adolescents and young people.
We look forward to hearing how health systems can provide more integrated, youth-friendly and stigma-free care that responds to the realities of adolescents’ lives.

There are different pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) options available to help prevent HIV. In Nigeria, injectable PrEP options, including and cabotegravir long-acting ( -LA), are available. Both are longer-acting PrEP options that can offer longer-lasting protection against HIV.

As ’s Country Lead for Nigeria, Dr Eleen Chinyere Ekanem, shares in this video, healthcare providers have an important role in ensuring individuals know about their PrEP options and feel empowered to ask questions about which option may work best for them.

🎉 A big congratulations to Zwelakhe Dalisile Clinic, a -supported facility, for hosting South Africa’s main event this year👏🏾

As part of the build-up, , in collaboration with the Chris Hani District Department of Health, TB HIV Care and MaTCH, mobilised communities and engaged mothers, partners and healthcare workers. Promoting breastfeeding for all women, strengthening HIV prevention knowledge, and listening to the experiences of pregnant and breastfeeding women on accessing and using PrEP.

Together, we are advancing quality care and moving closer to the elimination of vertical transmission of HIV.
