💙🏃‍♀️ RED CROSS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL RELAY 2026 – MORE THAN JUST A RACE! 🏃‍♀️💙
The day started at 08:00 this morning, with the first runners setting off into a cool, misty Cape Town morning. 🌫️🏃‍♀️
I had the privilege of being part of the Breatheasy team, taking on the relay around Rondebosch Common with a ventilator on my back. 💙 This was not an easy task.

For me, this was about so much more than running. It was about showing that nothing is impossible when we work together, and that children who depend on ventilators or tracheostomies can still live meaningful lives, achieve their goals and overcome challenges with the right support. 💙

As someone who works with ventilated and tracheostomy children in the home environment, I see how important teamwork truly is. It takes a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, caregivers and families working together to give these children the best possible care and opportunities to thrive.

Every person plays a vital role. 💙

Today was a reminder that behind every ventilator, every tracheostomy and every medical device is a child with dreams, potential and a life worth celebrating. They are so much more than their medical conditions! 💙

Our Breatheasy team gave it our all and finished 13th out of 27 teams! 🏅🎉

We are incredibly proud of what we achieved together!

👏 A huge congratulations to Lean Mean and Ketamine, the winning team of the day! 🏆 And well done to every team that participated and helped make this event such a special one.
Thank you to everyone who organised, participated and supported this wonderful event for Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Because it takes a team to cross the finish line, and a team to care for a child at home. 💙
Together, we can help little lungs breathe easier and little lives reach their full potential. 💙

💙 Down Syndrome Awareness Month | October 💛

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month — a time to celebrate individuality, promote inclusion and raise awareness of the health needs of people with Down syndrome.

One area that deserves particular attention is sleep and breathing. People with Down syndrome have a significantly increased risk of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) due to factors such as differences in upper-airway anatomy, reduced muscle tone, enlarged tonsils and adenoids, and a tendency towards upper-airway obstruction.

Sleep apnoea doesn't always present as obvious pauses in breathing. Loud snoring, restless sleep, unusual sleeping positions, mouth breathing, frequent waking, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness, irritability, behavioural changes or difficulties with attention and learning can all be possible signs.

⚠️ If you notice any of these symptoms, don't simply assume that they are part of Down syndrome. They should be investigated.

A sleep study can help identify sleep-disordered breathing and determine whether treatment is needed. Recognising and managing sleep apnoea can make an important difference to sleep quality, behaviour, development, cardiovascular health and overall quality of life.

This Down Syndrome Awareness Month, let's remember that every person deserves to breathe well, sleep well and live a meaningful life. 💙💛

🌸 WHO TAKES CARE OF THE CAREGIVER? 🌸

She is the mother.
She is the professional.
She is the supporter.
She is the problem solver.
She is strong.

But even strong women need support too. 💗

So many women spend their days caring for everyone around them while quietly putting their own needs at the bottom of the list.

This Women’s Month, remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish — it is necessary.

Make time to breathe.
Make time to rest.
Make time to sleep.
Make time for you. 💜

Because when you take care of yourself, you have more to give to the people you love.

🌸 Your health matters. Your sleep matters. You matter.

Breathe well. Sleep well. Live better.

🌸 Happy Women’s Day 🌸
Today we celebrate the strength, courage and resilience of women.
The women who nurture, support, lead, inspire and keep going — even when life asks a little too much of them.
But being strong doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone.
Sometimes strength is also found in pausing, resting and taking care of yourself. 💗
This Women’s Month, remember to make time for the woman behind all the roles you carry.
Your health matters.
Your wellbeing matters.
Your sleep matters.
Here’s to every woman — you are powerful, you are enough, and you are amazing. 🌸💜
Breathe well. Sleep well. Live better.

💗 Women's Month is a reminder to care for the one person who often comes last... YOU.

As women, we spend so much of our time caring for our families, our careers, our homes and everyone around us. But your health deserves the same attention.

Did you know that sleep apnoea doesn't always look the way people expect—especially in women?

Instead of loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness, women may experience:
🌸 Persistent fatigue
🌸 Morning headaches
🌸 Anxiety or low mood
🌸 Brain fog and poor concentration
🌸 Difficulty losing weight
🌸 Hormonal changes
🌸 Frequent night waking
🌸 High blood pressure or heart palpitations

Too often these symptoms are blamed on stress, ageing or menopause, leaving the real cause undiagnosed.

✨ Quality sleep isn't a luxury—it is essential for your heart, hormones, mental wellbeing, energy and overall health.

This Women's Month, give yourself permission to put your health first.

💕 Because taking care of yourself isn't selfish—it allows you to keep showing up for the people you love.

If you've been wondering whether poor sleep could be affecting your health, we'd be happy to help you find answers.
