At 26, Kaésha Daniele Smith became a stem cell donor because she wanted to give someone with cancer more time with the people they love.

After learning about the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) at university, Kaésha registered as a donor. When she was later told she was a potential match, she couldn’t believe that an “ordinary young lady” like her could potentially save a life.

Earlier this year, Kaésha donated her stem cells. Despite some discomfort, she kept reminding herself: “It will be worth it.”

“There are no words to describe the feeling of helping someone, especially to save someone’s life.”

Kaésha would do it again in a heartbeat. Her message to others is simple: “Sign up with the intention to help someone in any way you possibly can.”

Two weeks to go to the SABMR Charity Golf Day that will see the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal face off to see who can raise the most money for the Registry.

This year World Marrow Donor Day (WMDD) is celebrated on Tuesday the 22nd of September. WMDD is a day dedicated to thanking the selfless individuals who register and donate stem cells to save the lives of patients in need.
