In a world where information comes at us non stop.. and the daily environment tends to be busy ALL the time.. it's worth knowing what your sensory system is doing with all that input..

If you live with or treat depression and anxiety, you already know there’s a difference between symptom management and addressing the root cause. But what most people and the mental health practitioners that support them never explore is the layer beneath depression and anxiety: the sensory system.

Your nervous system is processing the world every single second, and when it's overwhelmed, everything feels harder. In our latest blog article, Dr Annemarie Lombard unpacks where Sensory Intelligence® fits into your mental health journey or practice and how understanding your 7 senses can help you and your patients navigate daily life with more ease.

Sensory Intelligence® isn’t a replacement for therapy. It's the piece that makes everything else work better.

Clinical Insights | The Pain Collective

This week, Carin Terblanche (Biokineticist, with a special interest in hydrotherapy) took us into the complex world of hypermobility and pain — and the disconnect that often exists between what patients feel and what we can observe clinically.

We explored the importance of a comprehensive clinical assessment using validated tools, looking beyond joint hypermobility alone and considering how these conditions can affect multiple body systems. Hypermobility is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed, and many people living with these conditions report feeling unheard or invalidated in their healthcare journeys.

Some key reflections from the session:

• Hypermobility is not just “flexibility” — it is a multisystem condition often associated with chronic pain, fatigue, and overlapping diagnoses
• Pain is influenced by more than joint laxity — proprioception, motor control, and nervous system regulation all play a role
• Movement can feel unpredictable and difficult to trust for many individuals
• Exercise is not only about strengthening muscles — it can support neuroplastic change, improve proprioception, and contribute to functional improvement over time

We also discussed how approaches such as graded strengthening, proprioceptive training, and hydrotherapy can support safer, more confident movement. Hydrotherapy, in particular, may be a useful starting point when land-based exercise feels overwhelming.

Take-home messages:

• Resistance training can be beneficial for symptom management and functional improvement when appropriately guided
• There is often a gap between what patients feel and what clinicians observe — effective care involves recognising and bridging this
• Management needs to be individualised — standard approaches often require adaptation
• A multidisciplinary, person-centred approach is key, supported by education, movement, and ongoing care

Understanding hypermobility requires looking beyond joints alone and recognising the broader systems involved in pain and function.

✨ Patient Journey | Liezel ✨

Liezel has been living with chronic lower back pain since 2018. A year ago, she underwent an amputation of her right leg. As part of her recovery, her left hip, knee and ankle had to adapt to new physical demands, which contributed to ongoing discomfort. She also experienced phantom limb sensations on her right side.

After multiple surgeries and extended hospital stays, Liezel was referred to our Panorama Pain Clinic for further assessment and support.

Working alongside our multidisciplinary team developed an individualised management and rehabilitation plan tailored to her specific needs. Her treatment plan included interventional pain procedures and a structured rehabilitation programme, including hydrotherapy, aimed at improving strength and function in preparation for prosthetic fitting.

Liezel has since progressed to the next phase of her rehabilitation, including receiving her prosthesis, and continues to work closely with her healthcare team as she moves forward in her recovery journey.

Every patient’s condition and response to treatment is unique, and management plans are tailored accordingly.

Don’t Wait for a Fracture 🚨

Osteoporosis can quietly weaken your bones long before you feel pain. A simple bone density scan can reveal your risk early and it could prevent serious injury later.
