Kidney disease is often called a silent disease for a reason.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects approximately 10% of the global population, yet there are often no noticeable symptoms during its early stages. Many people don’t realise they have kidney problems until the disease is more advanced.

Risk factors can include high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and a family history of kidney disease.

When symptoms do appear, they may be subtle. Look out for:

• Changes in urination, such as urinating more at night
• Foamy or bloody urine
• Swelling of the legs or ankles
• Persistent tiredness or fatigue
• Uncontrollable high blood pressure

Because early kidney disease may have no obvious symptoms, routine testing is important for early detection.

Kidney disease can develop without you knowing it.

Experts estimate that as many as 9 in 10 adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are unaware that they have it, making early detection especially important.

The good news is that kidney disease can be detected through routine testing. A simple blood test can estimate kidney function, while a urine test for protein can reveal early signs of kidney damage, often before symptoms appear.

Regular screening is particularly important if you have risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of kidney disease.

Early detection can significantly improve outcomes and allow steps to be taken to slow or even stop the progression of kidney disease. Left undetected or untreated, CKD can progress to kidney failure, with some patients eventually requiring dialysis or a transplant.

If you’re at risk, talk to your doctor about a kidney health check-up.

Living with Type 2 diabetes and planning to fast during Ramadan?

Fasting during Ramadan is an important spiritual practice. If you have Type 2 diabetes, planning ahead and managing your health carefully can be especially important.

Tiervlei Trial Centre is recruiting for the ACHIEVE-RAM clinical research study, which is investigating a GLP-1 medication in adults with Type 2 diabetes who intend to fast during Ramadan.

You may be eligible if you:

• Are 18–65 years old
• Have Type 2 diabetes
• Intend to fast during Ramadan
• Have a BMI of 25 kg/m² or higher

Can you manage Type 2 diabetes without breaking your fast during Ramadan?

For many people, fasting during Ramadan is a deeply meaningful spiritual practice. If you are living with Type 2 diabetes, planning ahead is essential to help you fast safely and manage your blood sugar.

Tiervlei Trial Centre is recruiting participants for the ACHIEVE-RAM Study, a clinical research study evaluating an investigational medication for people with Type 2 diabetes who intend to fast during Ramadan. Researchers will assess whether the medication can help manage blood sugar levels, support weight management, and improve overall wellbeing before and during Ramadan.

You may qualify if you:
