Why have we become so used to telling women to be careful, watch where they go, avoid certain places, and change their routines, instead of asking what men need to change?

Today, our Program Director Paul Potsane joins Gareth Edwards on eNCA’s All Angles at 14h30 to talk about why gender-based violence is not only a women’s issue, and why men need to be much more active in the solution.

From how we raise boys, to the role fathers and male role models play, to men holding other men accountable — these conversations cannot continue to sit mainly with women.

Women should not have to organise their lives around the fear of violence. We need to start changing the behaviours and environments that make that violence possible.

📺 Tune in today at 14h30 on eNCA.

We say no to women having to live in fear.

And while we urge women to take the current safety warnings seriously, stay alert and follow SAPS guidance, we also know this:

Women restricting their movement cannot be the long-term answer to violence against women.

We should not have to choose between safety and freedom.

We have the right to walk, run, work, travel and move through our communities without fear. We have the right to autonomy. We have the right to feel safe.

So yes, right now, take precautions. Look out for one another. Stay informed.

But let’s also be clear about where the responsibility ultimately lies.

The problem is not women moving freely. The problem is violence against women.

The five murders of women that happened in Kempton Park is unacceptable.

We say no to GBV.
We say no to fear controlling our lives.
We say yes to safety, freedom and autonomy.

If you or someone you know has experienced gender-based violence, you do not have to navigate it alone. WhatsApp our Chomi GBV support service on 082 229 6251 and type “Hi” to start the conversation. Chomi can connect you to information and support, including counselling, safety planning, emergency assistance and other services.

He doesn’t want to wear a condom? You can Chomi 👀

Yep, female condoms are a thing, and they give YOU another option when it comes to protecting yourself.

Check out this video of our Shout facilitator showing you exactly how it works. 👆🏽

Your body. Your health. Your choice. 💜

What does menstrual justice mean to you?

This was the question we asked at our menstrual justice initiative launch event last week in Soweto, where we officially launched the distribution of 30 000 of our reusable period panties.
Every girl has the right to sanitary hygiene and dignity when it comes to their period.

We also know that sometimes a young person looking for information and support around their period is also needing sexual health support like HIV testing, PrEP, relationship advice, mental health support, GBV resources, and more.

That’s why we are your safe space Chomi. We are here to guide you and provide you with this support and free healthcare services.

Find one of our mobile clinics in your area, or start a chat with our free AI healthcare companion, Self-Cav. Just WhatsApp the word ‘Phola’ to 087 373 1548 and talk about anything that’s on your mind.
