Following up on yesterday’s fuelling reel, how do we train our gut to be able to take on extra carbs on race day?

Also, turns out it’s not just the training of our gut but also our genetics that plays a part…

Met from at the race expo and he gave me some great fuelling tips that helped me not only PB at Oceans half and Cape Town Marathon, but didn’t once get nauseous during the race 🙌

I’d been following the “social media pro athlete” hype of 100-120g carbs/hour on race day and my body just couldn’t absorb so much carbs, I tried to train myself to inject that much carbs but it really is just too much for me.

Sticking to 60g carbs/hour like Andrew suggested, not only helped me to achieve PBs at both races, but I felt strong and confident throughout!

Won’t lie, that was hard as heck but I did it! And I’m so stoked. The most massive thank you to all of you who cheered from the sidelines. The incredible people I ran with. A massive shout out to and

Sometimes when I train, my diabetes likes to remind me that I’m still T1 Diabetic, today was one of those days.

Training for endurance sport, be it running, cycling or swimming, is fun but tough, throw in T1 Diabetes to the mix and some days it can be one heck of an adventure.

I can do everything right and my glucose levels can be too high or too low, everything plays a part of this fine balancing act. Today from the halfway point of my last long run before next week, I just couldn’t seem to keep my glucose levels up.

Two pit stops, a gel, a coke and a sprite later - I managed to finish my run. Was a humbling reminder that I have an extra thing to be vigilant about when doing the things I love to do.

Considering the old days before synthetic insulin when diabetics were kept still and had a short life expectancy, I am beyond blessed to be able to live such a full life! I’ve been T1 since I was 8 years old!
