“Why does my leg hurt if my back feels fine?” 🤔

Sometimes, pain in your leg isn’t a muscle or joint issue at all — it’s a nerve sending signals along its pathway!

🧠 Dermatomes = the skin zones each spinal nerve connects to.
💪 Myotomes = the muscles each nerve controls.

When one of these nerves is irritated, pain or weakness can appear downstream — even if your back seems okay.

At Emma Hegarty Physiotherapy, we look beyond the sore spot to find the real cause — so your recovery isn’t just temporary relief, but true restoration.

🎾 Tennis elbow? Even if your racquet’s been in the garage since 2003…

If your elbow’s giving you attitude every time you lift a coffee, carry groceries, or type like a maniac — you might have tennis elbow.

Spoiler: You don’t have to play tennis to get it. You just need to be really good at overusing your forearm.

Common causes?
💻 Desk work
🛍 Carrying bags
💪 Lifting at the gym
👶 Holding kids (aka tiny kettlebells)

The good news? With the right rehab, physiotherapy can make a big difference in your pain and function.
✅ No racquet required
✅ No injections necessary (in most cases)
✅ Just targeted physio that actually works

🏌️‍♂️ Back pain affecting your swing? You’re not alone—low back pain is one of the most common complaints among golfers.

📉 Poor spinal mobility, weak core stabilizers, and overuse can all contribute to discomfort and reduced performance.

🧠 Physiotherapy can help by:
✔️ Improving thoracic and hip mobility
✔️ Strengthening core and gluteal muscles
✔️ Correcting swing mechanics through movement retraining
✔️ Providing individualized rehab and prevention strategies

Don’t let pain drive your game—let’s get your spine back in play.

🏃‍♀️ Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is a common overuse injury in runners, characterized by lateral knee pain due to friction between the IT band and the lateral femoral epicondyle.

🔬 Physiotherapy plays a critical role in addressing biomechanical contributors such as hip abductor weakness, poor lumbopelvic control, and abnormal running mechanics.

📈 Evidence-based interventions include load management, myofascial release, neuromuscular re-education, and progressive strengthening—particularly targeting the gluteus medius and core stabilizers.

Early intervention is essential to reduce recurrence and ensure safe return to sport 🏃‍♂️ 🚴‍♂️

💪Muscle Strain Healing Times 💪

Straining or pulling a muscle can be very sore and you might wonder how long does it take to heal? Maybe you are training for a race and want to know how long until you can get back to training?

The table below shows that different degrees of injury require different healing times, and we need to give our bodies the time and opportunity to heal.

Physiotherapy can help in the healing process of a muscle strain with hands on treatment, and help guide you with how to strengthen and load your muscle to return to full function and prevent it from happening again. 🏋️⛳️

Let’s look after our muscles in 2025 🏃‍♂️‍➡️

Comrades is 25 days away! 🏃‍♀️
Training for an ultra marathon? Race day success starts weeks in advance.
Injury prevention isn’t just about tape and warm-ups—it’s about smart, consistent preparation.

🧠 Here’s how to take care of your body before the big day:
✔️ Sleep and hydrate – recovery and tissue repair depend on both
✔️ Address niggles early – don’t ignore minor aches
✔️ Fuel wisely – optimize nutrition to support long miles and recovery
✔️ Taper properly – reduce volume, not intensity, in the final weeks
✔️ Strength and mobility work – keep hips, glutes, and calves strong and responsive
✔️ See your physio – prehab > rehab

🎯 Stay sharp. Stay strong. Stay injury-free.
Let’s get you over that finish line 🏁

🌟 Unlock the Power of Dry Needling for Pain Relief! 🌟

Struggling with chronic pain or muscle injuries? Dry needling might be the solution you’ve been looking for! 🩺✨

✅ Targets Trigger Points – Relieves tight muscles and reduces pain.
✅ Boosts Healing – Stimulates blood flow and promotes tissue recovery.
✅ Improves Mobility – Helps restore movement and flexibility.
✅ Quick & Effective – Minimal discomfort for lasting results.

I love dry needling and how it can support your healing journey. This doesn’t mean you have to have needles if you come and see me for physio treatment, it just is another tool in my tool belt to help you heal. These are extremely thin acupuncture needles and are 1000x more comfortable than an injection (I’m not a fan of injections but can happily handle dry needles!).
