🚫 MYTH:
You should rest completely and avoid all exercise when you have arthritis.

✅ FACT:
Gentle, regular movement is one of the best things you can do for your joints.

Resting too much weakens the muscles around the joint, leading to more instability and pain over time. Walking, swimming, and cycling keep joints lubricated, build strength, and reduce stiffness.

Movement is medicine. The key is choosing the right kind. 🙏

🌿 The spice in your kitchen cupboard might be doing more than you think.

Curcumin, turmeric's active compound, has been shown in multiple clinical trials to reduce joint pain and stiffness to a level comparable to ibuprofen - without the gastrointestinal side effects of long-term anti-inflammatory medication.

But here's what most people don't know 👇

Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. Adding a pinch of black pepper boosts absorption by up to 2000%. Not a typo.

So next time you make a curry or warming winter soup, add your turmeric, and don't forget the black pepper. 🙏

It won't replace your treatment plan, but as part of an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, it's one of the best things you can add to your plate.

💬 Do you cook with turmeric? Tell us how below! 👇

💙 Men's Health Awareness Month

South African men are known for pushing through. But when it comes to health, that same toughness can work against you.

Men are far less likely to seek medical help and in our practice, we regularly see men who've been living with severe hip or knee pain for years before finally coming in.

Here's what we want every man to hear 👇

🔹 Joint pain that limits your movement is not just "part of getting older."
🔹 Waiting doesn't make it better, it usually makes it worse.
🔹 Seeking help isn't weakness.
It's how you stay strong for the people who need you.

Book the appointment. Take the first step. 🙏💙

💬 Tag a man in your life who needs to hear this!

💜 Autoimmune Arthritis:
When Your Body Attacks Itself

Unlike wear-and-tear arthritis, autoimmune arthritis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the joint lining - causing chronic inflammation that damages cartilage and bone over time. It can affect anyone, at any age.

The most common forms include:
🔹 Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA):
Painful, swollen joints with fatigue and prolonged morning stiffness.

🔹 Psoriatic Arthritis:
Joint inflammation linked to the skin condition psoriasis.

🔹 Ankylosing Spondylitis:
Primarily affects the spine and hips, with stiffness that improves with movement.

🔹 Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis:
More common in children than most people realise.

The earlier it's diagnosed, the better the outcome. Rheumatology and orthopaedic care working together can slow progression and protect your joints long term. 🙏

🦴 Bone Health 101 | Part 2 of 2: Exercise

Are you doing the one thing that actually tells your bones to get stronger? 💪

Bones respond to stress, when you load them through exercise, they adapt by increasing their density. No stress? No signal to grow.

Best bone-building exercises:
🚶 Walking:
30 minutes a day makes a measurable difference.
🏋️ Resistance training:
Direct load on bones stimulates growth and fights osteoporosis.
💃 Dancing:
Multi-directional movement is brilliant for bones and balance.

Note: Swimming and cycling are great for joints but don't provide the same bone-building stimulus, so mix them in, don't rely on them alone.

💬 What's your favourite form of exercise?

💡 Did You Know?
Your balance has a direct impact on the health of your knees.

When your balance and proprioception (hidden sense), are strong, the muscles around your knee work together to absorb impact and stabilise the joint.

When they're not, your knee compensates - leading to increased wear, instability, and a higher risk of falls over time.

The good news?
Balance can be trained at any age. Simple exercises like single-leg stands and heel-to-toe walking have been shown to reduce knee pain and improve joint stability significantly. 🦵

💬 Try it now: stand on one leg for 30 seconds. How did you do? Tell us below! 👇

💜 Arthritis Awareness Month | Part 3 of 3:
Solutions & Treatment Options

Here's the message we want to leave you with this May: arthritis is manageable and for many patients, it's transformable.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but here's what we know works 👇

✅ Lifestyle changes -
Weight management, low-impact exercise, and an anti-inflammatory diet can significantly reduce symptoms and slow progression.

✅ Physiotherapy -
Targeted exercises strengthen the muscles around affected joints, reducing pain and improving stability.

✅ Medication -
From anti-inflammatories to disease-modifying drugs for autoimmune types, the right medication can make a meaningful difference.

✅ Injections -
Corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections can provide relief and buy time before surgical intervention is needed.

✅ Joint Replacement Surgery -
For advanced arthritis where other treatments no longer provide relief, hip or knee replacement can be life-changing. Modern techniques mean faster recovery and outstanding long-term outcomes.

You have options. You have hope. And you have a team ready to walk this journey with you. 💛🙏

🦴 Bone Health 101 | Part 1 of 2:
Calcium & Vitamins

Let's talk bones - in a "this actually affects your daily life" kind of way. 👇

Your body cannot produce calcium on its own. If you're not getting enough through food, it quietly borrows it from your bones, weakening them over time without you even knowing.

Best sources:
dairy, sardines, almonds, broccoli, and fortified plant milks.

But calcium alone isn't enough.
Vitamin D is the key that unlocks calcium absorption and Cape Town's sunshine is one of the best natural sources. J

Just 15–20 minutes a few times a week does the job. ☀️
And don't overlook Vitamin K2, it directs calcium into your bones where it belongs. Find it in fermented foods, egg yolks, and cheese.

Strong bones start on your plate. 🙌

💬 What's your go-to calcium source? Tell us below! 👇

Symptoms to Watch For

Arthritis doesn't always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it starts as a quiet ache that you brush off - until it isn't quiet anymore.

🔸 Joint pain or tenderness
🔸 Stiffness
🔸 Swelling
🔸 Reduced range of motion
🔸 Grinding or clicking sensations
🔸 Fatigue

If any of these sound familiar, please don't ignore them. Early diagnosis leads to better outcomes - always. 🙏
