🥚 On a great many Irish farms the land was the man's and the cattle were the man's, and the hens were the woman's. That distinction mattered more than it sounds.

Poultry was left to the women of the house almost everywhere, and it was treated as small beer by everybody until you look at what the money actually did. Eggs went to the local shop or the market weekly and came back as cash or credit, and crucially that cash did not go into the same pocket as the cattle money. It was hers. In households where a woman might never handle the price of a bullock in her life, the egg money was a real and regular income she controlled outright. 🐔

And the list of what it paid for is remarkable. Children's boots and school things. Cloth and thread. The doctor. Small debts nobody wanted discussed. And, again and again in the records and the family stories, the passage ticket that took a son or a daughter to America.

It is one of the least celebrated economies in Irish history and one of the most consequential. A very large number of Irish emigrants crossed the Atlantic on the back of hens their mother kept, and the ledger for it was never written down anywhere. 🌿
