A while ago, I shared a post about s*xual wellbeing and it's connected to overall health.
I received quite a few DMs, which was interesting. There was clearly a conversation happening privately, even if not many people felt comfortable joining in publicly.
And it got me thinking...
We talk about our workouts, what we eat, how we sleep, our hormones and our mental health… but when it comes to s*x, desire and intimacy, there's still so much hesitation.
Why?
Sexuality is a normal part of being human. It doesn't suddenly become irrelevant as we get older, and it's certainly not something we should feel embarrassed to talk about.
Our bodies change. Our hormones change. Our relationships evolve. And our experience of desire, pleasure and intimacy can change too.
Sometimes desire is spontaneous. Sometimes it needs a little more space, connection or time to emerge. Sometimes we become more confident about what we want. And sometimes we need to get to know our changing bodies all over again.
Sexual wellness isn't about performance, having a particular libido or living up to anyone else's expectations.
It's about understanding your body, communicating openly, feeling safe, respecting boundaries and allowing yourself to experience intimacy and pleasure without shame.
And this is what holistic health is all about: recognising that our physical, mental, emotional and relational wellbeing are all connected. Sexual wellbeing is part of that picture, too — not something separate or something we should feel awkward about acknowledging.
And no, we don't need to share the details of our private lives with the internet to have these conversations. But perhaps we can start by being a little more comfortable acknowledging that s*xual health matters. Because it does.
At 25, 45, 65 and beyond.
Let's make s*xual wellbeing part of the wider conversation about health, connection and living well. 🤍
Have we become so accustomed to keeping this part of ourselves private that we've forgotten we can actually talk about it?
I'd love to hear your thoughts — here or privately, if that feels more comfortable.
