♿ One size does NOT fit all when it comes to wheelchairs.
A wheelchair is much more than a means of mobility—it’s often a person’s primary way of participating in daily life. The right fit can make all the difference to comfort, health, independence, and quality of life.
A poorly fitted wheelchair can lead to poor posture, pain and discomfort, fatigue, reduced independence, difficulty with functional tasks, and an increased risk of pressure injuries. Poor positioning can also contribute to pelvic tilting, sliding, increased muscle tightness or spasticity, joint deformities over time, and skin breakdown.
On the other hand, good positioning supports posture, breathing, pressure management, comfort, and function. When the body is properly supported, activities such as eating, self-care, communication, and mobility become easier and more efficient.
Every individual has unique needs. A wheelchair should be prescribed according to a person’s body size and shape, diagnosis, muscle tone, mobility requirements, daily activities, environment, and goals. That’s why wheelchairs should fit the person—not the other way around.
Occupational Therapists play an important role in assessing seating, posture, pressure management, comfort, and functional needs to help determine the most appropriate wheelchair and positioning solutions.
