What have you learnt about yourself during lockdown? What have you learnt about your family during this time? Yes the honeymoon period is truly over (ref a previous article). The filters have been removed.

There is no place to run. We are experiencing ourselves in our raw state. What buttons are being pressed and why? We have to set our own timetables and can no longer use excuses like; I can’t deal with this right now, I have to be at work, school, get exercise, have a meeting to attend ...... the list goes on.

Now it is you who decides your daily routine. Has that been a shock to you? What shouldn’t be a shock to you to is that your mode of operating, YOUR true mode of operating is your temperament, saying observe me, honour me, so that I may find my own true rhythm. What a gift we have been given in this time.
Why is it important to know your own temperament and the temperament of those around you? It is important because this is fundamentally how we relate to the world, our environment and the mode in which we conduct our relationships with others.

Whether you are an extrovert or introvert or a bit of both; whether you are more of a fire person – choleric; an air person – sanguine; an earth person – melancholic; a water person – phlegmatic; a mix of 2, 3 or 4; is what innately determines how you “do life”.
So in this time of uncertainty, stress, aha moments, whatever you are experiencing; our reaction and how we respond will be governed by our temperament. We are the microcosm of the macrocosm. At this moment in time we have enormous choices to make; for ourselves, our families, our communities, our world.
Within each temperament there is an opportunity to grow and be the best of what that temperament offers. It is not always an easy road to travel, it requires effort and awareness.

The balance of temperaments provides a perfect working model. Are you the strategist, the doer, the visionary; perhaps your strength is in communicating and bringing people together; or are you the deep thinker, the creative; does your talent lie in being the listener, the person who brings calm to a situation, the person others can rely on? A balance of the 4 temperaments can create a powerful team. The ultimate reward is that we can be a team player in this game of life – an authentic team player that gives of their best.

Deciding to have a family or choosing not to is a big decision in itself. Many times we don’t get to choose. Whatever the circumstances, women in particular find themselves in a position where everybody feels that they have the right to share an opinion on the matter. Many people think they have a right to place a judgement on the decision and have the right to dispense advice of their choosing. However well meaning this may be, no one but no one can prepare you for the road ahead.
Motherhood is a lived experience, from the moment of conception. Your body is unique, your circumstances are unique and how you react to motherhood is unique. I am not talking about learning and finding out as much as is possible to pave the way, sharing and having support from others. I am talking about the not knowing how you will react to becoming a Mum. Nobody can teach you this but yourself.
Like with so many other situations in life, we do not know how we will be in this role until it becomes a lived experience. And here’s the rub. When the rest of society places judgement on you, the guilt, the shame, the perceived inadequacies and the doubts start creeping in.
This is a whole new role that will test your personality type; your temperament to it’s limits. Listen to your inner voice, know who you are, learn how you relate and develop confidence in that. A choleric fiery temperament will ‘do’ motherhood very differently to a watery phlegmatic temperament. Your needs, physically and psychologically, will be so very different. You may want to have the best of both worlds of career and motherhood. You may prefer to engage with your child by always being with them. There is no one size fits all. The learning curve will always be there – how do I now engage with a brand new being who also has needs, that may not be the same as yours.
Stand true to yourself and be guided by how you do your life. Adjust your life accordingly to what works for you. What other people think of you is none of your business.
Know your temperament.

This is my speciality. Consultations can be done face to face or online.

When the honeymoon is over
The rose coloured tint on the spectacles has faded, the light shines through stark and bright. The colour wash is no longer there to mask the sharp edges and the rough surfaces. We return to the mundane, the routine, the earthy reality of day to day. To be fair, we would accomplish very little if we lived continually in that shaded world.
Now we see our everyday partner, who like ourselves, slips into the “this is how I do my day to day life”; this is what suits me in order to deal with the real and mundane”.
Perhaps it’s the new employee who is now trying to fit into the dynamics of the office environment, or the boss realising the person who seemed to be filled with so much promise falls decidedly below the mark.
What about the family who welcomes a new “bundle of joy” into their lives. The time comes when this bundle of joy exerts their own wants and needs and demands more and more attention; maybe fitting in or disrupting the dynamics of the existing family.
All these situations are simply the individual person going back to their “base cloth”, their fundamental temperament. We all do it and it’s a very big part of how we roll.
Empower yourself by getting to know how to manage relationship dynamics. I am here to help.

Everything we do has a rhythm, a pulse or a flow. It is not just when we tap out a tune or sing a song; it is in the smallest task we perform. Witness yourself going about your daily tasks – brushing your teeth, walking, combing your hair, chopping vegetables, knitting, reading, driving your car, eating. For a moment catch yourself performing these mundane tasks and observe your rhythm or flow. Which side of your body to you favour when you walk, how fast or slow do you move, where is the lilt or hesitation, what is the intention? Subtly change one thing about this flow and observe what happens when you change the rhythm. And so it is with every movement we perform. By changing the rhythm, we change the flow of energy. It is interesting what you learn about yourself when you observe what can so often become rote or robotic movement.
The Moon, the symbol of our emotional world, is in constant flow and flux. It too, affects our rhythm and we can mark this in the flow of our emotions as the Moon makes it’s monthly round through the zodiacal signs. The Moon rules the tides of the ocean, the ebb and flow of the water to the shore. It also rules our bodily fluids. We cry when we experience emotion, we lubricate when we are aroused, we salivate when anticipating a delicious meal.
We all seem to be in a constant outward thrust of action and doing, always on the go. What if in our daily lives we follow the rhythm of the Moon? The signs of the zodiac are either male or female and it alternates evenly from one to the other as we move from Aries (male) to Ta**us (female) and so on. When the Moon moves from a male to female sign, observe how you interact with your environment. The ebb and flow of outward action, the giving energy alternates with the inward action of receiving in a beautiful rhythm of balance. Be kind to yourself and let the Moon’s energy inform your actions for the day.

The Journey
I’m reminded of a saying that goes something like this: “we travel the world to find ourselves, only to come back to the place we left, the place we call home”. This can be likened to coming back to the comfortable place we call “me”. When we look at it in terms of our temperament, our ‘base cloth’, we will always be the cloth of our origin.
On a physical level, so many of us spend so much time and effort in altering and changing our outward appearance, but soon discover that our genetic makeup has a different agenda. Our genetic markers guarantee that we will age in a certain way, despite the cosmetic intervention.
One can argue that this is so with our temperament mix, our ‘base cloth’. In life we strive to better ourselves, gain experience, gain wisdom, become a better me. Often we lose our way. We fake it till we make it; strive to be what the latest trend says you can be; give up our worth in exchange for the latest next big thing.
So we work our cloth; perhaps we embroider it, paint it, shape it, adorn ourselves with it, tear it up and put it back together again. It may seem sometimes that it is unrecognisable, but the original material, the warp and weft of the cloth remains the same. Silk will not become cotton, wool will not become h**p, satin will not become velvet. It remains the same.
The cut and design of the garment is only as good as the ‘base cloth’ allows. When we start out on our journey, our big adventure, the comfort of coming home and rediscovering the place we always knew, is where our journey truly begins.

The Art of Timing

The seasons know it, the birds and the bees know it but the human race has lost touch with the art of timing. Everything thing is fast paced and now, now, now. Fomo is big in our lives and we lose track of our own individual rhythm.

Stress – the big topic of the day, permeates the very soul of our being and we lose trust in the cycles of our lives. The most difficult advice that my clients struggle with is to trust their own journey and the cycles that govern their lives. Indeed Astrology is the art of timing. There is the big picture, the big cycles of the decades and generations that we are born into; the unfolding of worldly events that most people have very little control of but within that are our own individual cycles within cycles. How many times in your life have you looked back at how events have unfolded and marvelled at the synchronicity and ‘coincidences’ that came together, that were not necessarily of your own doing. It may have been a strong wish or manifestation that you actively engaged in but the timing was not of your own. Conversely, how many times did you look back and see the wisdom in something you badly wished for, not working out and in it’s place something of far more value.

Many, many times we come to a fork in the road and have to make a decision. If we know where in our cycle we are, we can make a more informed choice. That career move that you pushed for so hard and stressed about; the one that never materialised but perhaps later when the time was right it fell into your lap. Similarly that relationship you were so sure was going to happen but disappointed, and then, when you were least expecting it, you met the partner of your dreams. We can avoid so much stress in our lives if we tap into our own cycles.

Being at the right place at the right time is what makes life happen.

It’s been a week of language, words, meaning and metaphors for me. It started with a conversation about how in my youth we had our own cultural language known in those days as slang. Any outsider interacting with any member of said group would not have understood or been able to contribute much to the conversation. And so it is with our youth today. The meaning of words and phrases have been so twisted as to render any generational conversation a laugh a minute.
For me it highlights, certainly for the older generation, a fear perhaps that we will no longer be heard and that our wisdom, gained from the hard knocks and swings and arrows thrown at as by living life, will be lost on the generations to follow. And for the youth, the frustration that they are not being heard and have an intense need to do things their way.
So what does this have to do with astrology? Even though the world around us changes at an ever increasing rate, we as humans stay the same. We all still have the same needs and desires – love, security, belonging, recognition, connectedness, to name a few. We make the same mistakes and experience the same achievements as man has done since the beginning of time. Birth, death and transformation. As each new generation comes into being, the choices in how we achieve what we want is so much bigger and here comes the rub. We are living in a world of overwhelm, fomo and a loss of trust in our own inner voice. Astrology is a path back to our very own individual core, the me that stands firmly rooted while the branches and leaves get blown every which way. You can avoid “barking up the wrong tree”.
I quote Morcheeba – “when the business in your life don’t sit with your soul”
