Post-surgical pain management: Do’s ✅ & Don’ts ❌

Recovering from surgery is a journey and managing pain well can make a big difference in how smoothly you heal.

✅ DO:

• Take medication as prescribed.

• Use a pain scale (0–10) and report worsening pain early.

• Combine medication with ice packs, elevation, relaxation, and rest.

• Move safely as instructed to aid recovery.

• Drink water, eat fibre, and prevent constipation.

• Take pain medication before activities if advised.

• Let your healthcare team know about any side effects.

❌ DON'T:

• Skip doses to "be tough."

• Take extra medication without medical advice.

• Drive or operate machinery while on strong pain medication.

• Drink alcohol while taking prescription pain medication.

• Use heat during the first 48 hours after surgery.

• Ignore worsening pain or new symptoms.

• Stop long-term opioid medication suddenly without guidance.

❗Call your surgeon if you experience:

• Pain that suddenly becomes much worse despite medication.
• Fever, chills, redness, or drainage from your incision.
• Nausea or vomiting that prevents eating or drinking.
• No bowel movement for 3 days or more after surgery.

Healing is not about enduring unnecessary pain—it's about giving your body the best chance to recover safely.

Listen to your body, follow your treatment plan and reach out when something doesn't feel right.

Can you actually prevent appendicitis with diet and lifestyle… or is it just bad luck? 🤔

Appendicitis is largely down to biology and luck, the scary part is that we can’t really predict who will get it.

But one thing does make a huge difference: acting fast when the symptoms start. 🩺⚠️

The earlier you seek medical help, the better the outcome before the condition becomes serious.

Have you ever ignored stomach pain thinking it was “just something you ate”? 👀

Beyond the bright lights and sterile scrubs, I never forget that there is a person—a patient—who is looking for answers and feeling a bit nervous.

When I talk about putting "a camera down your throat" (an endoscopy), I know it sounds intimidating.

But I use this tiny lens as a window to your health; it allows me to see what the naked eye can’t.

It’s the difference between me guessing what’s wrong and me knowing exactly how to help you heal.

Why I believe it matters:

Early Detection: I can catch ulcers or inflammation before they become major hurdles.

Precision: I move beyond just treating symptoms to finding the "why."

Peace of Mind: I want to replace your "what-ifs" with a clear plan.

Your health deserves more than a guess; it deserves a clear view.

Recovery after an appendix removal is usually quicker than many people expect — with most patients returning to normal activities within about two weeks. 💭

But what happens when nausea and vomiting continue for days after surgery?

Sometimes it could be linked to the anaesthesia, while in other cases, it may point to complications or even the intestines taking longer to “wake up” and function normally again. 🩺

These conversations remind us how important it is to pay attention to the body during recovery and healing.

Sometimes the pain doesn’t end after surgery. 💭

Can a ruptured appendix cause long-term issues like adhesions or scar tissue?

And why do some people still experience bloating and abdominal discomfort years after surgery? 🩺

This conversation sheds light on how healing after an appendectomy can sometimes be more complicated than expected.

That small organ sitting beneath your liver?

It may only be the size of a pear… but when something goes wrong, the pain can feel overwhelming.

Gallbladder pain is often mistaken for:

⚠️ Heartburn
⚠️ Chest pain
⚠️ Indigestion
⚠️ Even a heart attack

Many people ignore the warning signs until the pain becomes unbearable.

If you constantly experience:

• Pain after eating fatty foods

• Bloating or nausea

• Pain on the upper right side of your abdomen

• Discomfort that spreads to your back or chest

…your body may be trying to tell you something.

Early diagnosis can prevent serious complications.

Don’t wait for the pain to become an emergency.

Surgery gave me a voice worth using.

Surgery chose me — I just listened.

I never knew that my purpose would be found in changing lives through my hands, my knowledge and my heart.

Every patient, every procedure and every moment in theatre reminds me why I answered the call.

This is more than medicine to me. This is purpose. This is passion.🩺✨

Are you listening to your stomach?

It’s a question I ask often because your digestive system is incredibly vocal if you know what to listen for.

I believe that a healthy life starts from the inside out.

When things feel off in your gut, it impacts your energy, your mood, and your focus.

I see my role not just as a surgeon, but as a partner in helping you navigate these internal cues before they turn into serious complications.

Here is the reality: Your gut often knows there is a problem weeks—or even months—before your mind is willing to admit it.

I’m curious—what is the one stomach symptom, you’ve been ignoring lately? Let’s talk about it in the comments. 👇
