You’re right, I keep doing it. Sorry.

Here it is without:

Cape Town has always been home.

New York. Johannesburg. New York again. Johannesburg again. Back and forth for years. Getting back here felt almost impossible for a long time. But I’m back. At 41, finally back.

And I am ready to live my richest, most present life right here.

Long walks outside. Catching every bit of sunshine I can. The rain, the storms, the dramatic skies. I want all of it. But the sunsets. The sunsets here are something else entirely. There is nothing on this earth quite like watching the sun go down over Cape Town. Nothing.

When you leave this city you realise no other place makes you feel the way it does. The energy, the mountain views from every angle, the little beaches, the coffee shops and restaurants tucked into every corner. It all adds up to something that is genuinely incomparable.

We truly have it all here. And I will never take it for granted again. πŸŒ…πŸ”οΈπŸŒŠ

Do an incline walk after every weight session and watch what happens to your body composition. You have seen this everywhere. So have I. And I want to give you my honest take on it because there are a few things this trend is not telling you.

The real reason to save your cardio for after weights is not just fat loss. It is because you will lift heavier, train harder and get so much more from your session when your energy has not already been spent. That is the actual strength of this method.

But here is the part that frustrates me. Most people are completely exhausted after 30 to 40 minutes of lifting. Getting back on the treadmill takes serious willpower β€” and I say that as someone who considers themselves fairly disciplined. I still struggle with it. The walk gets skipped. And you cannot keep skipping your cardio. Heart health, weight maintenance, energy. It matters.

And the lower back issue β€” nobody is talking about this. Extended incline walking puts real strain on the lower back. As someone in her 40s I have felt this personally. My opinion: do not go above a 5 or 6 incline. Protect your spine. The trend will not tell you that. I will.

Does walking after training burn more fat? Yes β€” because after resistance training your glycogen stores are depleted and your body turns to fat as fuel much faster. The science supports it.

My verdict: weights first, walk after, every time if you can. But a walk you actually do will always beat the one you skip. Do not let perfect be the enemy of done. 🀍

This is what works for me. You do not have to copy it. But I hope it inspires you to find a healthy-ish rhythm that works for you and your body.

A few things I want to add because context matters.

Please do not become complacent and convince yourself a bad habit is a good one. Skipping breakfast because you overdid dinner the night before is not a fast. It is just skipping breakfast. However, if your body genuinely runs better on a later meal, that is completely valid. There is a difference and only you know which one it is.

As someone in her 40s I absolutely believe that protecting your hormones comes first. Having around 5 to 10g of fat in the morning is what settles my body and my mind. It grounds me before anything else.

And my breakfast is not always a protein smoothie. Sometimes it is an omelette with sliced toast. Sometimes Greek yoghurt with berries and seeds. This is just one example of what a Monday can look like for me β€” because Monday is often when I grab the opportunity to realign. A little reset. A chance to come back to my habits in full.

If you would like me to do a lunch onwards carousel, just let me know in the comments. I am happy to. 🀍
