🌾 Allergy Myths Busted: Gluten-free is always healthier
❌ That’s not true.
A gluten-free diet is essential for people with conditions like coeliac disease or gluten intolerance. But for people without these conditions, removing gluten does not automatically make a diet healthier.
Many gluten-free products are highly processed and may contain more sugar, fat, or salt to improve taste and texture. They are also often lower in fibre and may not be fortified with nutrients like iron and B vitamins.
Cutting out gluten unnecessarily can sometimes lead to nutrient deficiencies if the diet is not carefully planned.
πŸ’‘ Professional Tip: Only follow a gluten-free diet if it is medically recommended. If gluten must be avoided, work with a healthcare professional or dietitian to ensure the diet remains balanced and nutritious.

South Africans are feeling it… the cost of living has gone up, and our food baskets are taking the hit πŸ…πŸ“ˆ

As a dietitian, I see how rising food prices can make healthy eating feel out of reach β€” but with a few smart tweaks, we can still nourish our families without breaking the bank.

Here are some practical (and realistic!) ways to stretch your food budget while boosting nutrition:

πŸ₯¬ Bulk up with veggies
Add more cabbage and spinach to meals β€” they’re affordable, versatile, and packed with nutrients.

πŸ₯˜ Think β€œstew-style” meals
Stews go a long way. Trim visible fat off meat before cooking and let vegetables, lentils, and potatoes do the heavy lifting. You’ll use less meat but still get a hearty, satisfying meal.

🍝 Upgrade your pasta meals
Using a cheaper pasta? No problem β€” just boost the quality of what goes on top.
A simple bolognese can include:

- Tomato & onion base
- Grated carrots
- Baby marrow
- Mushrooms

By adding these veggies, you can increase the fibre content of your sauce to roughly 6–8g per serving, helping to β€œrescue” lower-fibre pasta and keep you fuller for longer.

πŸ₯• Stretch your protein
Use smaller portions of meat and bulk up with lentils, beans, or extra vegetables. Your wallet β€” and your gut β€” will thank you.

🌽 Buy seasonal produce
Seasonal fruits and veggies are almost always cheaper and fresher.

πŸ₯£ Bring back breakfast basics
Simple porridges like oats, Maltabella, and wheat-based cereals are affordable, filling, and a great way to start the day.

At the end of the day, it’s not about perfection β€” it’s about making small, practical changes that add up. Eating well on a budget is possible with a little creativity (and maybe a bigger pot of stew πŸ˜‰).

I know the festive season can be a challenge for those trying to stick to a healthy eating plan. But let's shift the focus: it's okay to indulge a bit!

Instead of stressing about every bite, let's talk MINDLESS eating vs MINDful eating. Mindful eating is about being present with your food, enjoying it, and listening to your body's hunger cues. πŸ₯—

Holidays are also about movement! Can't hit the gym? Take a stroll through the mall or play with the kids - get those steps in!

Most importantly, be present with your loved ones. Mental health matters, and quality time with family can do wonders for your overall wellbeing.

So, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the festive time with loved ones.
