Autism Parent Support Hub

Autism Parent Support Hub This page has been started by two therapists (an Occupational Therapist & a Speech Therapist) who are passionate about Autism.

They recognise that there is a need for access to good quality information for parents who have children on the Autism Spectrum.

As we end off our series about Autism, we think about how often we do find ourselves in awe of the little people that we are so privileged to work with.

Once you build rapport with an Autistic child, you are in the privileged position of being able to access their interests and strengths. Through harnessing these so much learning is possible! The goal of therapy with Neurodiverse individuals should never be compliance. It should always be about helping them to build autonomy, develop competence and build confidence. Helping them find joy in their world and in relationships with the people they love is our ultimate goal!

Autism Acceptance is key! Our kiddies want to know that we care about what is meaningful for them.

Continuing on with our series highlighting how amazing and unique our Autistic clients are. We learn new things from them every day and we often say that we learn more from them than they learn from us.

Autism Acceptance 🩵

As a practice we are very passionate about Autism acceptance. We work with many autistic children, all of whom are incredibly unique. They surprise us so often with how amazing their brains are and how differently they see things. We learn so much from them! For Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month we will be running a little series highlighting some of the amazing things our autistic clients can do.

Today on World Autism Acceptance Day let’s be mindful of the fact that being Neurodivergent may make our kiddies do things a little differently, but it doesn’t make them less! We need to recognise how we can change to be more inclusive, supportive & accepting so that they feel safe in our world and are given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

- visual schedules are a visual representation of the child's day
- this is especially helpful for kids that benefit from routine and may have anxiety around unpredictability
- the schedule can include everyday visuals like bath time/story time as well as things that can be considered out of routine e.g. Mall/restaurant
- because most autistic children are stronger visually, the visuals are more helpful compared to if you give verbal explanations of their day

There are many free visual schedules online: https://adayinourshoes.com/free-printable-visual-schedules-for-home-and-daily-routines/
