The South African Reserve Bank has released data on the current account of the balance of payments (BoP) for the first quarter of 2026. This is a summary of transactions between South African residents and the rest of the world, and includes trade in goods and services, income and current transfers.

The surplus on the current account of the BoP widened markedly to R190.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026 from R50.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 – the largest surplus since the third quarter of 2021. As a ratio of GDP, the current account surplus widened to 2.4% in the first quarter of 2026 from 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2025.
