We enjoyed an awesome morning of artistic magic at our monthly Club Meeting, mini show and expo today.

It’s always a pleasure but today was extra special as we crowned our resident Bonsai Queen, Kubie Hariparsad as the 2026 KZN New Talent Winner! Very well done to all participants but especially Mogeshin and Mike who placed second and third respectively - it was a tough competition and you were all worthy winners.

Kubie and Mogeshin will go on to compete in the SA final taking place in Bloemfontein in October.

Well done to everyone involved and thank you for all those who came out to support the participants as well as artists.

If you’ve spent any time at the Durban Bonsai Society, you’ll know this name — and you’ll definitely know the nickname 😉

Meet Shaun Murphy, our Lifetime Honorary Member and Club President… affectionately known as “Mr Miyagi.”

With years of experience, patience that seems to have no limits, and a deep understanding of trees and technique, Shaun has quietly shaped not just bonsai — but people. Many of our members will tell you that their journey truly began under his guidance.

Whether he’s refining branch structure, demonstrating technique, or offering that perfectly timed piece of advice, Shaun leads with calm authority and a genuine love for the art. His passion for bonsai runs deep, and his commitment to growing the club and mentoring members is something we’re incredibly grateful for.

Behind the nickname is a mentor, teacher, and steady hand who reminds us that bonsai isn’t rushed — it’s cultivated over time, with care, patience, and vision.
