Today, on World Physiotherapy Day, we recognise the physiotherapists who play an important role in helping patients recover, regain mobility, and return to everyday activities.

This year's World Physiotherapy Day focuses specifically on the role of physiotherapy and physical activity in the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

For vascular patients, rehabilitation and appropriate physical activity can be important before and after treatment, helping patients regain strength, improve mobility, and build confidence as they recover.

To all our physiotherapy colleagues who form part of the vascular healthcare journey, thank you for helping our patients get moving again.

YOUR KIDNEYS CAN'T ALWAYS TELL YOU WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG.

Chronic kidney disease often has no obvious symptoms until it has progressed. This is why screening is so important, particularly if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other risk factors for kidney disease.

A simple blood test can help assess how well your kidneys are filtering, while a urine test can help identify early signs of kidney damage.

If you are at increased risk, ask your healthcare provider how often your kidney function should be checked. For people with diabetes, kidney screening should form part of annual care.

When kidney disease progresses to kidney failure and haemodialysis becomes necessary, reliable vascular access becomes an essential part of treatment.

Our practice provides specialised vascular access care, including the creation and maintenance of AV fistulas, AV grafts, and dialysis catheters.

Prevention first. Early detection matters. And when dialysis becomes necessary, protect your vascular access.

Diabetes and high blood pressure don't only affect your blood sugar or your heart. Over time, they can also damage the delicate blood vessels within your kidneys and contribute to chronic kidney disease.

Good management matters.

✅ Know your blood pressure.
✅ Know your blood sugar.
✅ Take your prescribed medication.
✅ Attend your regular medical reviews.
✅ Stay active and make healthier food choices.

If you are living with diabetes, annual kidney testing is an important part of your routine care and may include a blood test to assess kidney filtration and a urine test to look for albumin.

Managing your health today can help protect your kidney function for the future.

Kidney disease can develop silently. In its early stages, there may be few or no noticeable symptoms, which means significant kidney damage can occur before you realise something is wrong.

This National Kidney Awareness Week, make kidney health part of your routine healthcare.

Protect your kidneys by staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and, importantly, keeping chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure well controlled.

If you have diabetes, hypertension, or other risk factors for kidney disease, speak to your healthcare provider about regular kidney screening.

Don't wait for symptoms. Be proactive, know your risks, and protect your kidneys.

As Women’s Month comes to an end, the conversation about women’s health should not. 💜

Women are often expected to tolerate discomfort, manage pain, and continue with their responsibilities despite symptoms. 🌸

✔ Persistent pain should not simply be normalised.
✔ Swelling should not automatically be ignored.
✔ Non-healing wounds deserve attention.
✔ Pelvic symptoms deserve investigation.
✔ Changes in circulation should be assessed.

Throughout this month, we’ve highlighted the importance of women’s vascular health, pelvic pain awareness, venous disease, blood clots, prevention, and healthcare advocacy. ✨

Women deserve to have their concerns heard and their symptoms appropriately investigated. 💜

Keep listening to your body and prioritising your health. 🌸

A woman’s vascular health can be influenced by different stages of life. 💜

Pregnancy, hormonal changes, ageing, medical conditions, and lifestyle factors can all affect the veins and circulation. 🩺

Symptoms that deserve attention may include:
✅ Persistent leg swelling
✅ Leg heaviness or aching
✅ Visible or painful varicose veins
✅ Changes in skin colour
✅ Non-healing wounds
✅ Unexplained pelvic pain
✅ Sudden changes in circulation

These symptoms should not automatically be attributed to pregnancy, menopause, or ageing without appropriate assessment. 🌸

At every stage of life, your circulation matters. ✨

Cervical cancer remains a significant women’s health concern in South Africa, and the diagnosis of cervical cancer in younger women is an important reminder that prevention needs to begin early. 💜

Most cervical cancers are associated with persistent infection with high-risk types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV vaccination offers an important opportunity to protect young girls before exposure to the virus and significantly reduce their future risk of developing HPV-related cervical cancer. 🩺

Cervical cancer is largely preventable, and prevention needs to begin before adulthood. This Women’s Month, we encourage parents, caregivers and families to learn more about HPV vaccination and ensure eligible girls receive their vaccination. 🌸

As healthcare professionals, we believe we have a responsibility to support disease prevention and the long-term health of women in our communities. Vaccinating young girls today is an investment in the health of the women they will become. ✨

August provides an important opportunity to raise awareness around organ and tissue donation.

For people living with end-stage organ failure, transplantation may offer the possibility of a new chapter in life. ✨

Organ and tissue donation depends on the generosity of donors and their families, and one of the most important steps is starting the conversation.

Learn about organ and tissue donation, understand your options, and discuss your wishes with your family. 💚

A simple conversation today could make a meaningful difference in someone’s future. 🌸

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms within a deep vein, most commonly in the leg. 🩺

Women may experience times in their lives when their risk of developing a blood clot is increased.

Key risk factors include:
✅ Pregnancy and the period after childbirth
✅ Major surgery or prolonged immobility
✅ Long periods of travel
✅ Previous blood clots or certain medical conditions
✅ Certain hormonal contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy
✅ Smoking, particularly with other risk factors

Some hormonal contraceptives can increase blood clot risk, but women should not stop prescribed contraception without medical advice. Individual risk factors should be discussed with a healthcare professional. 💜

Symptoms such as new unexplained swelling, pain or significant changes in one leg should not be ignored. Seek medical advice if something does not feel right. 🩺

Know your risk. Understand your health. Make informed decisions with your doctor.

Today we celebrate the strength, resilience, and contribution of women across South Africa. 💜

National Women’s Day is also an opportunity to recognise the importance of women being heard when it comes to their health. 🌸 Women should feel empowered to speak about symptoms, ask questions, seek second opinions when necessary, and advocate for appropriate investigation and treatment. ✨

Pain should not be dismissed. Symptoms should not be minimised. Women deserve to be heard.
