Vitamin D deficiency is a clinically significant, yet frequently overlooked, consideration in obesity medicine. ☀️
Because Vitamin D is lipophilic, it is sequestered within expanded adipose depots, resulting in markedly reduced circulating concentrations. Patients with obesity typically require two- to three-fold higher replacement doses to achieve therapeutic serum 25(OH)D levels.
The metabolic implications extend well beyond bone health. Hypovitaminosis D is associated with heightened systemic inflammation, impaired insulin sensitivity, reduced energy metabolism, and potentially diminished efficacy of anti-obesity pharmacotherapy.
In clinical practice, Vitamin D repletion should be approached as a foundational metabolic intervention: assess baseline status, implement weight-adjusted supplementation, and monitor response.
