Thank you for ur support 🙏🙏🙏

Breast cancer survivors need reconstruction after losing a breast to the disease, but there is no funding available in state hospitals.

That’s where SAMFA’s Power of Pink campaign comes to the rescue, raising money for Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Project, which provides silicone breast prostheses to survivors in need.

To help these women, simply buy pink punnets of mushrooms at PnP in October!

Just over two weeks remain until we unite on social media under one page! If you know of someone in our community that does not follow this national page, please encourage them to do so. Please like and share this post.

On 1 October 2020, the Reach for Recovery (R4R) community will have ONE NATIONAL page exclusively – this one! We will be closing all other pages and groups. There are a few important reasons to do this and we’ll highlight them over the next few weeks. One of the top reasons is to create one united front as Reach for Recovery. We want to speak as one community with one united voice. We would like to create one cohesive platform where visitors and our community can connect with us and obtain resources and useful information in just one place. Please share this information and make sure that everyone in our community is following this national page!

OUR ESSENTIAL CARE BAG DELIVERIES CONTINUE UNDER LOCKDOWN!

Every patient supported by Reach for Recovery who is undergoing hospital treatment receives a care bag from us. This special bag contains a booklet and pamphlets dealing with various topics that are relevant to breast cancer patients.

We also include practical items to alleviate discomfort and assist patients post-procedure:

• a soft prosthesis (temporary breast form)
• a cushion for underarm comfort
• a sponge to exercise the arm
• The bag itself can serve to contain the port-au-vac drain (which makes movement much easier)

On average, our volunteers hand out more than 2 500 of these care bags annually. All are lovingly made by volunteer sewing teams and materials are either bought or donated.

During this lockdown, all our volunteer groups have come up with clever ideas to have bags delivered to patients who need them. They have been so creative leaving care bags at hospitals before and after lockdown, dropping them at patients’ homes, or meeting with patients at halfway points to deliver and collect. We also receive support from hospitals, oncologists, nursing staff and physiotherapists to help ensure that patients receive their care bags.

If you need a care bag or know of somebody who does, please contact our National Manager, Stephanie van Deventer and we will be happy to assist. Email at: [email protected] or message or call on 079 462 3973.

Thank you to our precious volunteers, for your big hearts♥️full of love for others. Love you all💞Jenny

Today on Father's Day, the Reach for Recovery community is privileged to share the personal insights and cancer journey of the Govender family, who lost beloved wife and mother, Lala, to breast cancer on 26th May 2020. Her widower, Pastor Ronnie Govender, shares these special and inspirational words with us all:

"I write this to encourage all men who have a partner, wife, sister or mother fighting this disease. My wife never lost hope and always turned the most challenging of days around with her jovial spirit. I often found myself gathering strength from her ability to always see things through humour. As my dear wife used to say: Hold onto hope, hope of better days, hope of recovery, hope that many have."

Our community honours all men who have experienced the breast cancer battle personally, and for their strength and commitment to their families.

Lala Govender is remembered further in these special words from her daughters and son:

“Mum's 16-year journey with cancer began in 2004 when she was first diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Once she was well enough, she started volunteering for CANSA, Reach for Recovery and Reach for a Dream. During that time cancer returned twice more but that never deterred her faith in God, and passion for helping others. In this journey she continued being the best wife, mother and grandmother, making every day special with the littlest of gestures. Mum truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; trips to the beach, parks and family gatherings were priceless.

She devoted herself to the fight against cancer and raising awareness amongst women in our community. She was a beacon of hope to many cancer patients and survivors. Her infectious and hopeful spirit healed women and men from all walks of life.”

Pictured: Ronnie (father), David (son), Lala (mother), Alvina, Prinola and Amy Govender (daughters) at the Annual Reach for Recovery function in Durban in October 2019, where Lala gave a talk and her son played the piano while her three daughters sang.
Always remembered. ###
