How to Prevent Running Injuries

Knee surgeon Dr Matt Foster often gets asked how patients can prevent injuries while running. His mantra? Start low, go slow.

That means starting with lower mileage and slower pace. You can then build your way up while continuing strength training as you increase distance and speed.

Remember not to overdo things. It’s about working your way slowly into it and listening to your body. There is a reason why marathon training takes 6 to 12 months.

We’re here to pick up the pieces, but prevention is always better than a cure.

Combating Caloric Deficit After Surgery

Orthopaedic surgeons are simply mechanics pressing the ignition on your healing journey. Your nutrition is the accelerator.

Your body goes into a hyper-metabolic state post-surgery, requiring additional calories to fuel healing and recovery. The key components of adequate nutrition after surgery include vitamins and minerals (Vitamin C and D), amino acids, and a high-protein diet.

There are many options, but Dr Matt Foster recommends Rebound Nutrition, a combined supplement that aids muscle and tissue repair.

Creatine. Is Cheaper Actually Better?

Creatine plays a crucial role in orthopaedic health. Its benefits go far beyond the gym – assisting in healing after surgery.

As the most globally researched sports supplement, it is a safe and effective way to increase muscle cell energy stores, which assists in strength, power, muscle growth, and recovery.

While creatine is a naturally occurring compound produced by our liver, kidneys and pancreas, Creatine Monohydrate is manufactured by binding a creatine molecule to a water molecule.

The good news is it’s even been linked to brain health and antioxidant support. But the even better news is that Creatine Monohydrate is the best one to take - and the cheapest on the market.

You can use it daily as a powder or capsule supplement, with the most standard dose being 3-5 grams per day.

Will Peptides Help with Healing?

Health is wealth, and in orthopaedic treatments, knowledge and research is key. Dr Foster warns against fad fixes like Wolverine Stack Peptides.

We need to know more about musculoskeletal peptides, aka Wolverine stack (BPC157 or TB500). There’s simply not enough human data on them yet and it’s also important to note that these peptides are not FDA-approved (unlike the better known GLP-1 peptides).

So do they help with healing? The answer is we don’t know yet. We need to wait for more evidence to support their use.

We’ve done our due diligence and can assist you on the best path to health.

The Orthopaedic Perspective on Peptides

Are you taking GLP-1 injectable peptides? Did you know you should be resistance training and taking adequate protein?

Here’s the orthopaedic’s perspective on Mounjaro madness and Ozempic overload… These drugs are proven and safe for use and can have excellent results. But it’s crucial to know that for almost every 10kg of weight you lose, 6kg is body fat and 4kg is muscle and water – IF you aren’t resistance training.

Always let your physician know if you’re on any GLP-1 drugs so that we can advise and treat you correctly.

Peptides Pep Talk with Dr Joe Wessels

There’s a lot of talk about Peptides - from natural to pharmaceutical, the safe to the sketchy. Dr Wessels breaks it down.

Basically, naturally occurring peptides are chains of amino acids that turn into proteins in our body after the age of 50. But many of our patients feel lost in the sea of pharmaceutical peptides on offer.

Over the next few posts, we’ll be taking you through more details on the differences between pharmaceutical options used in weight loss and diabetes management, such as the FDA approved GLP-1 analogs that you may recognise as Mounjaro, Ozempic or Semaglutide. But there are others in the compounding pharmaceutical groups that don’t currently have enough clinical data on safety and effectiveness.

The bottom line is, always do your research and speak to a clinician before going down the rabbit hole.
