Last week I had the privilege of joining colleagues and medical students in Chad for a free breast and cervical cancer screening event. Unfortunately, Chad currently lacks formal treatment programs for both cervical and breast cancer. This is concerning, especially considering the high incidence rates of these cancers in Africa. For instance, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality among women in developing countries, with 72,000 new cases recorded in sub-Saharan Africa in 2002. In Chad, the situation is dire, with limited access to screening and qualified personnel ¹ ².
Breast cancer is also a significant issue, with LMICs bearing a disproportionate burden of mortality due to delayed diagnoses and fragmented care systems. In fact, only 5% of LMICs have nationally implemented breast cancer screening programs, compared to 90% of high-income countries.
It's crucial that we initiate treatment programs for these common conditions. What are your thoughts on how we can work together to address this issue? Would you like to know more about existing initiatives or potential partners for cancer care in Chad?
