We were proud to co-host the Intensive HIV & Youth Course in Durban, South Africa this month (4โ€“15 May 2026) alongside Simon Fraser University (SFU), Canada, and the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), RSA.

Bringing together 7 Canadian and 15 African students, the course created a dynamic space for learning, collaboration and critical discussion around HIV research and youth engagement.

Thank you to all the students, facilitators and partners who contributed to an inspiring and impactful two weeks of shared knowledge and global collaboration.

We are looking for a Project Coordinator who to be based within the SANTHE Secretariat in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the administration and coordination of a community engagement project within SANTHEโ€™s HIV Cure programme called SHARP. The specific project involves designing and implementing responsive dialogues on HIV cure and Analytical Treatment Interruption (ATI) clinical trials. These responsive dialogues will take place at several SANTHE sites in Africa (including Botswana, Cameroon, Rwanda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) and may be expanded to other sites in Africa.

The objective of the project is to increase awareness and understanding around HIV Cure and also learn from our communities to better understand their perspectives on all aspects of cure and clinical trials. We intend to work together with our communities to advance the HIV Cure agenda in Africa and co-create information sharing documents and other material that can ethically support scientific research in this crucial niche area. The candidate will be expected to play a key support role and assist coordination of the project across sites.

Brief overview of duties:

Prepare, submit, and track ethics applications and amendments in coordination with study sites.
Data management support of project activities and deliverables.
Develop and maintain a coordination plan across study sites.
elp set-up in-country meetings and workshops, providing events support, in partnership with local staff.
Support developing project material including presentations to stakeholders/team members and progress reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

Social Science degree (Masters degree preferred).

Minimum Experience:

A minimum of 3 yearsโ€™ experience in research or project coordination
Computer Literacy
Experience in project coordination/management
Leadership skills
Communication skills
Problem solving skills
Ability to document information accurately, methodically and pay attention to detail
Ability to work independently and show initiative.

POST-DOCTORAL OPPORTUNITY IN RESEARCH

The HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, is inviting applications for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow (1-year fixed term contract - renewable) to be based at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine in Durban.

HPP is a multidisciplinary research programme with over 15 years of expertise in HIV-1 immunopathogenesis. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and internationally recognised research environment working under the supervision of Dr Bongiwe Ndlovu and Prof Thumbi Ndungโ€™u.

Research focus:
This position will contribute to cutting-edge work on HIV evolution and humoral immune responses, including:
Characterisation of HIV evolution and viral diversity
Interactions between HIV and broadly neutralising antibodies

Research aimed at informing HIV vaccine and immune-based cure strategies

Minimum requirements:
PhD in a biomedical field (awarded within the last 5 years)
Experience in virology, immunology, or molecular biology
First-author publications in peer-reviewed journals

Advantages include:
Tissue culture and postdoctoral experience
Strong scientific writing and communication skills
Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams
Self-motivation and adaptability in a research-intensive environment
