Organ of Corti
The Organ of Corti is the specialized sensory organ of hearing located within the cochlear duct (scala media) of the inner ear. It rests on the basilar membrane and contains inner and outer hair cells, supported by pillar cells and other supporting cells.
🔹 Inner hair cells – primary sensory receptors that transmit auditory information to the cochlear nerve.
🔹 Outer hair cells – enhance and fine-tune cochlear sensitivity through electromotility.
🔹 Tectorial membrane – interacts with the hair bundles of hair cells during sound-induced movement.
🔹 Basilar membrane – supports the organ and vibrates in response to sound.
🔹 Tunnel of Corti – formed between the inner and outer pillar cells.
Sound vibrations → movement of the basilar membrane → deflection of hair-cell stereocilia → receptor potential → activation of cochlear nerve fibers → hearing.
