A warm welcome to our page, and thank you, DR Zanele Bosch for joining us. Your support means so much. 💙
I am also deeply grateful for the helpful treatment programme I am currently experiencing, which is helping to lessen my symptoms and improve my quality of life.
We are excited that Zanele will be delivering a lecture at a medical conference in Gauteng in August, where my daughter, Dr Madeleine Muller, will also be speaking.
We are truly grateful for every opportunity to increase awareness and education around ME/CFS, as sadly many medical officials in South Africa are still largely uninformed about this devastating illness. Awareness, understanding, and research are so urgently needed for the millions who suffer in silence. See less

Chronic pain is not “just physical.” Research shows that our emotions, stress, anxiety, trauma, and nervous system state can directly influence how pain is experienced in the brain and body. Chronic pain and emotional health are deeply connected — often creating a cycle where emotional stress amplifies pain, and pain amplifies emotional distress.

This is why at Philani Integrative Health, we don’t only look at symptoms. We use the EMMEN Method to explore the whole person: the nervous system, movement, emotions, environment, metabolism, microbiome, mitochondria, and more — because healing requires a holistic understanding of the body and mind working together.

Pain is real. But so is the science behind the mind-body connection. 💛

Working with people living with chronic pain has opened our understanding of just how widespread autoimmune and chronic inflammatory conditions have become globally — and how deeply they are also affecting communities here in South Africa.
Over time, these conditions have challenged us to look beyond isolated symptoms and to expand how we think clinically. This has shaped a continuously evolving approach at Philani Integrative Health — one that has grown directly alongside our patients and their lived experiences.
This is how our clinical framework, EMMEN, emerged.
Since the early days of Philani approximately six years ago in EL, patients would present with back pain, neck pain, knee pain, ankle pain, migraines and more. Yet during clinical care, a consistent pattern began to emerge: physical symptoms were often connected to emotional strain, nervous system overload, metabolic and nutritional imbalances, environmental stressors, and relational pressures.
Every patient carried a story. Over time, these stories revealed a deeper structure to health and disease — forming the foundation of EMMEN:
E – Emotions
M – Microbiome, Metabolic health, Mitochondria
M – Movement
E – Environment / Community
N – Nervous system

The training in Osteopathy, a holistic clinical discipline, together with advanced study in botanical medicine, strengthened our understanding of the body as an interconnected system influenced by both structure and nature. These perspectives merged to shape our current and evolving clinical model.
Within this integrative framework, we also draw inspiration from classical healing philosophies. Two widely referenced principles, often associated with Hippocratic tradition, continue to guide this perspective:
“Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food” — traditionally attributed to Hippocratic teachings
and
“Look to the spine for the cause of disease” — a phrase commonly used within manual medicine traditions, reflecting the importance of structural assessment in health
While these are not always found as exact written quotations in historical texts, they remain enduring expressions of a broader philosophy: that health is influenced by nourishment, structure, lifestyle, and environment working together.

At Philani Integrative Health, we continue to combine these foundational ideas with modern clinical understanding. This allows us to support not only symptom relief, but also patient education, nervous system regulation, and long-term empowerment through a clearer understanding of their health journey.
As reflected in our logo & ethos, we remain inspired by nature and by the principle that healing is not one-dimensional. It is systemic, relational, and deeply interconnected.
We continue to walk this path with our patients — learning, refining, and growing together toward sustainable health.
