One of the most important distinctions we make in occupational therapy: the difference between being tired and being burned out. 💛

Tired is a physiological need that sleep can fix. Burnout is a nervous system state that happens when you’ve been running on empty for so long that rest stops being restorative.

Signs you may be experiencing burnout:
✦ You sleep but wake up feeling no better
✦ Things that used to motivate you feel meaningless
✦ You feel detached—just going through the motions
✦ Small tasks feel disproportionately heavy
✦ You’ve stopped doing things you once enjoyed
✦ You feel like you're failing at everything at once

This is especially important to name this June, during Men’s Health Month. Burnout in men often goes unrecognized and unsupported. It is frequently silent, and it is often masked by "pushing through." If you’re feeling this way, please know: this is just as real, and just as deserving of care, as any physical injury. 💚

If someone asked you to describe occupational therapy, what would you say? 🌿

Most people think of OT as strictly physical—helping with movement after an injury. And while that is a core part of our roots, OT for mental health is a different, vital layer of the profession that many people don't know exists.

At Wagner Occupational Therapy, we focus on the "doing" of life:
✦ We look at how your mental health affects your daily life—not just how you feel, but how you function.
✦ We help you rebuild the routines, habits, and structures that support your wellbeing.
✦ We teach emotional regulation, energy management, and sustainable self-care.
✦ We provide practical tools—not just coping mechanisms, but real skills for real life.

If you are struggling with burnout, anxiety, or simply feel like you can't keep up, this might be exactly the support you’ve been looking for. 💚

You don’t have to reach the finish line to earn your rest. 🌿

We often fall into the trap of "when-then" thinking: When I finish this report, then I’ll take a break. When I clear the house, then I’ll relax. But your nervous system doesn't know about your to-do list. It only knows how it feels right now.

Small moments of calm aren't just "nice to have"—they are essential tools for regulation. A deep breath in the garden, a quiet cup of tea, or five minutes of sitting still without a screen. These pauses are the stitches that keep your wellbeing from coming undone when the day gets heavy. ✨

If you’ve felt stuck lately, I want you to know: your struggle to start is information, not laziness. 🕊️

Mental health challenges often show up in the "in-between" moments—the tasks we avoid, the decisions that feel too heavy to make, and the energy dips we can't quite explain. These are valid symptoms of a nervous system that is working overtime.

Awareness is the antidote to the shame we often pile on top of these experiences. By noticing these patterns, we can stop asking "What is wrong with me?" and start asking "What does my system need to feel supported enough to move forward?" 🧠✨

A lot of emotional exhaustion comes from trying to carry things that were never ours to control. 🌊

Other people’s reactions. The pace of someone else's healing. The outcome of unexpected setbacks. Being "everything" for everyone.

When your mind is constantly trying to manage the uncontrollable, your nervous system never gets a chance to truly rest. It stays in a state of high alert, and that is where the burnout begins. 🌿

Part of protecting your wellbeing is learning exactly where your responsibility ends. You are allowed to put down the weight that doesn't belong to you.

Routines don't have to be rigid to be helpful. ✨

We often think of routines as strict timetables, but in OT, we prefer to think of them as rhythms. These are the small, intentional anchors we set throughout our day to help our nervous system feel safe and grounded. 🌿

A rhythm might be:
✦ Brewing a cup of tea without your phone in hand
✦ Five minutes of stretching when you wake up
✦ A specific playlist for your commute
✦ Checking in with yourself before you start your first task

These moments aren't about being productive—they're about being present. They are your way of saying, "I am taking care of myself today."

What is one "rhythm" in your routine that helps you feel grounded? Tell us below! 👇

5 Horror Stories from the life of an OT 👻🩺

If you know, you know. Behind the clinical skills and the goal-setting, there are the moments that make every OT’s heart skip a beat. Which one of these is your personal "nightmare"?

1️⃣ The "Independent" Illusion: When the client insists, "I’m totally independent at home," but can’t quite recall what year—or decade—it is.

2️⃣ The Group Dynamic Drama: You’ve meticulously planned the perfect group session, only for 100% of the participation to come from that one person who is oversharing their entire life history.

3️⃣ The "Just Kidding" Card: Spending 40 minutes on a rigorous cognitive assessment, only for the client to wink and say, "I was joking the whole time." (The patience required here is heroic!)

4️⃣ The Digital Vanishing Act: That sinking feeling when you finally hit "save" on your detailed notes... and the system crashes.

5️⃣ The Repeat Performance: Explaining an activity with perfect clarity, three times in a row, only for the client to ask: "So... what are we doing?"

Which one makes you want to hide in the treatment cupboard? Let us know below! 👇

"I feel bad for saying no." We hear this so often, but let's reframe that guilt. 🕊️☕

In occupational therapy, we look at your "capacity." If your output constantly exceeds your input, burnout isn't just a possibility—it's an inevitability. Boundaries are the tools we use to balance that equation. ⚖️🔋

Remember:

• You are not responsible for managing someone else’s discomfort with your limits.

• Needing space is a sign of self-awareness, not weakness.

• Protecting your peace allows you to show up better for the things that matter.

Save this post. Come back to it the next time guilt tries to talk you out of a boundary you know you need. 💚📌

Happy International Nurses Day! 🩺✨

Today, the Wagner OT crew wants to honour the nurses who make our work possible. Nursing is a truly humble vocation - it takes an incredible amount of time, patience, and energy to show up for others 24/7.

It is such a pleasure to work alongside people who share our passion for "Loving People." Whether you are part of our immediate team or a colleague in the broader healthcare field, we see the weight you carry and the care you provide. Thank you for everything you do! 🤍🕊️

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmoms, and mother figures in our community! 🌷✨

Being a mother is an all-encompassing role. As OTs, we see the invisible labor—the constant planning, the sensory overload, and the emotional energy you pour into your families every day. Today, we hope you can find some occupational balance.

May your day be filled with the kind of rest that actually recharges you. You do so much for everyone else; today, let the world do a little something for you. ☕🌿
