UMBULELO BREAKFAST 2026 πŸ¦“πŸ’›

Today we celebrated one of the most special events on the Carpe Diem School calendar β€” our annual Umbulelo Breakfast.

This year, we once again embraced our zebra theme. Just as no two zebras have exactly the same stripes, no two people are exactly alike. Every guest who supports Carpe Diem brings something unique β€” their time, love, encouragement, expertise, sponsorship, generosity or simply their belief in our school. In the same way, every one of our learners is unique, with their own strengths, talents, personality and place in our Carpe Diem family.

Our differences are what make us special, and together they create something beautiful.

β€œUmbulelo” is about gratitude, and this morning was our opportunity to thank the many people who walk this journey with us and contribute to Carpe Diem in so many different ways.

During the morning, we were also proud to showcase our Ukuwela Program, as well as the incredible talents, confidence and spirit of our learners.

Our choir sang like angels, with such beautiful movement and joy on their faces. Our hip-hop dance group entertained everyone with an energetic performance, moving from ballet-inspired steps to Irish dance moves and kwaito. And, as always, our marimba band completely stole the hearts of the audience.

Our little ones had their own very important role, interacting with our guests and handing out gifts β€” happily exchanging each one for a lollipop! Their confidence and excitement made the moment even more special.

We were equally proud of our senior learners in the DCAPS Skills Training Programme. Our culinary skills learners helped prepare the venue, set the tables and assist with serving the breakfast. They brought the food out with such elegance, poise and professionalism, giving our guests a wonderful glimpse of the skills they are developing for life beyond school.

And then, together, we enjoyed a beautiful breakfast.

To everyone who attended today, thank you for sharing this special morning with us. To those who were unable to attend, please know that our gratitude extends to you too.

Carpe Diem could not do what we do without the people who walk this journey with us. Every person has value. Every contribution has a place. Every learner has something unique to offer.

A special thank you to Rudi from Ciro’s Coffee, We Cook and Moras Eggs for sponsoring our delicious breakfast, and to the Carpe Diem Trust for sponsoring the bottled water on our tables.

Thank you for being part of our wonderfully unique Carpe Diem family. πŸ¦“πŸ’›

OPENING OF OUR SENSORY GARDEN 🌿🌸

After months of waiting, watching, dreaming and seeing our garden grow from bare ground into the beautiful space it is today, we are delighted to share that the Carpe Diem School Sensory Garden was officially opened this morning, 9 September, by Chanel Baumgarten from Els For Autism, South Africa. πŸŒΏπŸ’š

And with a surname like Baumgarten β€” literally β€œtree garden” in German β€” she could hardly have been more perfectly suited to open our beautiful new garden! 😊

A heartfelt thank you to Els for Autism South Africa for believing in this project and for helping us create a space that will make such a meaningful difference in the lives of our learners.

We are also incredibly grateful to B Green, David Ramage and his wife, Marie Ramage, for the planning, design and layout of the garden, and especially for dreaming alongside Carpe Diem School and helping us turn that dream into reality.

This is so much more than a sensory garden. It is an outdoor learning space β€” a place to explore, discover, experience nature, stimulate the senses, learn through play, find a quiet moment and simply enjoy being outdoors. Every pathway, plant and little corner offers another opportunity for learning and discovery.

To finally see our learners entering the completed garden, exploring it and enjoying everything it has to offer made this morning incredibly special.

From bare ground to a beautiful, tranquil learning environment β€” what a journey it has been. 🌱

Thank you to everyone who helped make this dream a reality. We cannot wait to see all the learning, exploring, growing and happy memories that will take place here.

Carpe Diem’s Sensory Garden is officially open! πŸŒΏπŸŒΈπŸ’š

A huge thank you to Els For Autism, South Africa for the wonderful communication boards that have been installed in our play areas at Carpe Diem School. πŸ’™

These boards give our learners the opportunity to communicate beyond the classroom β€” during play, social interaction and everyday activities. While they are especially valuable for learners with autism, they also support our non-speaking learners, learners with limited speech, and others with complex communication needs.

Our learners were so excited to explore the new boards! Even many of our verbal learners joined in, experimenting with different word combinations, communicating with friends and, of course, discovering plenty of ways to make each other laugh. 😊

Communication is about so much more than spoken words. These boards give learners another way to express what they want, need, feel and think β€” wherever they are.

Thank you, Els for Autism South Africa, for this very special and meaningful contribution to our school. It will make a real difference in the everyday lives of our learners. πŸ’™

🌳 National Arbor Week | Nasionale Boomplantweek 🌳

Today, Carpe Diem School celebrated National Arbor Week by planting trees on our school grounds. 🌱

Every tree planted is an investment in the future β€” providing shade, beauty, cleaner air and a greener environment for generations to come. It was wonderful to see our learners taking part and learning that even a small action can make a big difference.

🌿 Plant today. Grow tomorrow.

🌿 Plant vandag. Groei môre.

πŸ€ Friendly Basketball Fun in Cape Town! πŸ€

Our Carpe Diem basketball team, Esen Rockets enjoyed friendly games against Paarl School and Astra School in Cape Town.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our learners to showcase their talent, build new friendships and enjoy the game they love. The matches were played in a great spirit, with plenty of energy, teamwork and fun on and off the court.

A big thank you to Paarl School and Astra School for the warm welcome and enjoyable games. We look forward to many more opportunities to connect through sport.

Thank you so much to everyone who made a contribution towards an unforgetable weekend!

Well done, Carpies! We are proud of you! πŸ€πŸ‘πŸ’™

πŸ₯ BEAT AS ONE – Rhythm Matters! πŸ₯

A huge thank you to Jaco from DrumAbility for presenting such a special drumming session for our learners this morning. ❀️

It was energetic, interactive and so much fun, but also wonderfully regulating. Drumming is such a beautiful way to bring people together – listening to one another, finding a shared rhythm and simply enjoying the moment.

It was the perfect way to start our Friday, celebrate the spirit of Casual Day and head into the weekend with happy hearts! πŸ₯πŸŽΆ

Thank you, Jaco and DrumAbility, for bringing so much joy to Carpe Diem School.

Beat as One… and Go Bokke! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ’šπŸ’›
