Developmental milestones are a set of functional skills or age-specific tasks that most children can do at a certain age range.

They are markers of a child’s development from infancy through childhood.

In clinical practice, we use developmental milestones to help determine if a child is undergoing typical development or experiencing developmental differences that require additional support.

Self-soothing is not a developmental milestone.

Self-soothing has become a bit of a buzz term on social media. Despite the popular claims floating around in online spaces, there is no scientific evidence that infants or young children can be taught to self-soothe states of distress or dysregulation on their own. Infants and young children depend on caregivers for external soothing and co-regulation.

From a neurodevelopmental perspective, we know that the ability to self-soothe and regulate emotion builds gradually from the early years through the first two-and-a-half decades of life if and when children have a secure attachment with at least one caregiver who provides consistent enough attuned and responsive care and coregulation.

If you’ve ever read or been told something that made you anxious or concerned about your child’s ability to self-soothe or regulate their own emotion, please remember: self-soothing is not a development milestone, it is a complex process that develops gradually over years and years within the context of a sensitive and responsive relationship with a caregiver.

DID YOU KNOW? 80% of neuronal communication is from the body to the brain, only 20% is brain to body. Therefore working with the body is essential in achieving nervous system regulation. Just another reason why your child needs to be enrolled with Mindful Movers. 😉 (resuming on the 8th April).

Longitudinal research has shown that people with years of elevated cortisol exposure have hippocampi about 14% smaller than their peers, accompanied with measurable memory impairments. [PubMed: 10195112]

Magnesium helps buffer this cascade, acting like a shock absorber for the stress system.

At NMDA receptors, magnesium sits in the channel, blocking excess calcium from rushing in. [PubMed: 20152124]

And at GABA(A) receptors, magnesium makes the brakes more responsive, so calming signals are more likely to get through, even under duress.

And it's reasons like this so many rely on magnesium for a calm, balanced mood.
