Some of my university notes from approximately 16 years ago. And yet, we still struggle with formal speech, language, auditory processing, visual processing and IQ tests being administered on autistic individuals who often have sensory and motor differences that yield results which are, in my opinion, completely unreliable.

You know how sometimes your previous clients pop into your thoughts at random times and you wonder where they are and what became of them? Well, this morning a specific apraxic girl popped into my thoughts and I remember how her grade R teacher (who loved her dearly) felt that she was destined to run around in a field of flowers for the rest of her life because of how her speech and language skills presented at the time... Well, let me tell you, that girl is now in grade 3 and not just scraping through, but actually excelling in all aspects of her schooling career 🥳

So, food for thought on this Friday afternoon: don't underestimate intelligence due to an output malfunction.

It has happened more than once where I had a client for fluency that needed sensory integration occupational therapy, play therapy, etc. And yes, it did not remediate the dysfluencies in immediately, but it helped them reach their speech therapy goals more efficiently at the end of the day. Sometimes we need to take a step back and look at the whole picture 🌿
