George Municipality: Wasteful Expenditure

The collaborative summit between the George Municipality’s LGBTQIA+ Helpdesk and Gender Dynamix is an exercise in blatant wasteful expenditure. The Municipality should rather focus on correcting its misspent priorities and unspent grants, says Ferlon Christians Leader of the ACDP in the Western Cape.

God created male and female and the ACDP Western Cape seeks to stop the radical indoctrination of transgenderism in the Western Cape. This event in George is nothing more than indoctrination of young people. Gender is not fluid and to use names and pronouns that align with transgender gender identify is against the Word of God. A male is referred to as he/him and a female as she/her. We cannot refer to one person as them, they or it.

As the ACDP Western Cape we will always speak against gender based violence or any violence against people with a different persuasion but we can never endorse the LGBTQIA+ lifestyle.

To host the invited government departments and civil society comes at a cost to the municipality.

Sexual attack on young boy.

Ferlon Christians Leader of the ACDP in the Western Cape is horrified and appalled at the alleged sexual attack on an 8-year-old learner. SAPS have confirmed that a case of sexual assault has been registered at Athlone SAPS. The boy was attacked by a fellow pupil of the same school in the school toilet.
Christians strongly condemns the attack and calls for measures to be put in place to prevent a recurrence of the attack. Schools must be a safe place for learners, teachers and staff.
To ensure safety at schools the Western Cape Education Department has implemented a Safe Schools Plan. This plan guides schools on how to create and maintain safety at our schools. However, the attack on the boy indicates that the plan has gaps and loopholes at this particular school.
Christians calls for increased supervision of vulnerable spaces in schools to ensure the safety of learners. He supports the parents of this traumatised 8-year-old boy in their search for answers to what happened to their son.

Corporal Punishment

Corporal punishment has been outlawed for more than three decades says MPP Ferlon Christians Leader of the ACDP in the Western Cape. Therefore, it comes as a shock to hear reports that corporal punishment is still applied in some schools.

Corporal punishment violates both constitutional rights and disciplinary codes. Teachers guilty of administering corporal punishment face severe consequences. This can be dismissal, fines, imprisonment, and removal from professional registers.

Corporal punishment is degrading, cruel and humiliating. The Rights of learners not to be subjected to any forms of violence and not to be punished or treated in an inhumane way is protected under the Constitution.

The Childrens Act further protects the learners while at school from physical and psychological harm as contained in Section 7 (h) of the Act.

Despite all the protection afforded to learners they are still subjected to corporal punishment. Social media contains evidence of transgressions against learners by teachers. These offences can be reported to the SAPS.

Christians says corporal punishment negatively impacts teaching and learning. Teachers are professionally trained to act positively and with constraint when in the classroom.

Oversubscribed schools for grades R, 1 and 8

It is disappointing to hear that parents are desperately trying to enrol their children in Grade 8 in 2026. Some parents have been rejected as much as 10 times and are at their wits end, says MPP Ferlon Christians Leader of the African Christian Democratic Party in the Western Cape.

Some schools are oversubscribed and cannot take on any learners for Grade 8. A parent says she applied for admission at a school that is 2 km away from her home with no success. The same happened at the other schools where she applied. Parents who are rejected become despondent and cannot at this uncertain stage buy the required uniforms.
The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education has requested the Western Cape Education Department to provide a demographic profile of the 11,341 applicants who have lodged appeals to date.

Christians says admission appeals for Grades R, 1 and 8 for 2026 opened on 1 August and closes on 31 August and urges parents to use this opportunity to lodge an appeal.
