The Science of Beauty - What is SPF? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It usually takes around 15 minutes of sun exposure before you start to get sunburned. If you use a product with an SPF of 10, then you will have 10 x 15 minutes of protection before getting sunburned. This rule of thumb is affected by your skin type, how much protective cream you used, if you covered all the skin area and what activities you engage in. A lighter skin might start to burn after 12 minutes of exposure to the sun. Swimming and sweating will remove the protective benefits of the sunscreen. Skin is easily damaged by the sun but is also easily protected from the sun with the right products and care.
