Do you believe that it is important to have allies in the workplace?

⚡It's actually essential! BUT - there is a catch!🤯

It’s easy to get caught up in being friendly with colleagues, but there’s a fine line between building relationships and ensuring you have a solid support network. This balance is crucial, especially now, when people can quickly take offense.

As a coach, I’ve seen managers who thought they had a friend in the office, only to find out later that this person was documenting every little interaction. These “friends” then went to HR, feeling offended by feedback about performance or missed deadlines. It’s a tough situation—what was meant as constructive criticism ends up being seen as a personal attack.

It's important to have allies. Allies aren’t just friendly; they understand the workplace dynamics and respect professional boundaries. They’re the ones you can turn to for honest feedback and advice, helping you navigate tricky situations without fear of things blowing up.

But here’s the thing—there’s a balance. Being too friendly can make it hard to address issues like performance problems without damaging the relationship. On the other hand, if it’s all business, you might miss out on the trust and camaraderie that make an ally valuable.
