Today I woke with a familiar vision. The vision always starts the same. I am on a Sandy path leading to the farm gate of the farm we lived on so long ago. When I reach the gate, my mom and my two sisters, in their late twenties and early thirties when they died, are waiting for me. Resting their arms on the gate as the wind plays with their hair.
I walk towards them, tears streaming down my face.
I'm coming home. At last.
This time I realise I am old.
Really really old.
I have an awkward step and faded eyes, I'm walking slowly but surely. My face is weathered from a life well lived. Tears falling to know I'll soon be with them again.
My mother takes my shoulders, I am in her arms and my sisters complete a circle around me. I am warm and safe at last.
Then my mom turns me back to face the way I've come. There's a crowd of people I hadn't noticed before.
They're smiling and waving at me. I don't recognize them all. One by one they step forward to shake my hand. They tell me how I changed them or helped them or influenced them in big and small ways. One by one. So many.
'you were my friend' One says
'you changed my mind about the world ' another murmurs.
'you were there when I needed you the most'
'you were kind to me'
And my heart swells and overflows with emotion as I acknowledge each and every person I may have known, interacted with or been close to.
'You see,' says my mom.
'That's why you stayed. This is your legacy'
I found myself humbled with gratitude.
We can never know how one small act, word or kindness may mean to another. We may never know the impact of our being here might have upon those we know.
But every single one of us, impacts the world in a thousand different ways on a thousand different days. You don't need to be famous to leave your mark. You don't need a million followers to make a difference.
You just need to show up. Every ordinary day, exactly as you are! For you to leave an impact that's larger than you'll ever know.
You matter. Your life is important. Thank you for being here with us.
I hope I get to see the difference I've made one day. I hope we all do. X###
