๐ Common Chemotherapy Side Effects โ and How to Manage Them
Chemotherapy can be an important part of cancer treatment, but because it can also affect healthy, fast-growing cells, it may cause side effects. Not everyone experiences the same side effects, and their severity can vary depending on the chemotherapy drugs, dose and individual patient.
Some common side effects include:
๐คข Nausea & vomiting
Anti-nausea medication can help significantly. Eating smaller, more frequent meals, sipping fluids regularly and avoiding strong smells may also help.
๐ด Fatigue
Allow your body time to rest, but try to include gentle activity such as short walks when you feel able. Prioritising sleep, hydration and nutritious meals can help support your energy levels.
๐ฝ๏ธ Loss of appetite or taste changes
Try smaller meals throughout the day and choose nutrient-rich, high-protein foods. A dietitian experienced in oncology can provide additional support.
๐ Hair loss
Not all chemotherapy causes hair loss. If yours does, speak to your treatment team about what to expect and whether options such as scalp cooling may be appropriate.
๐ Mouth sores
Good oral hygiene and gentle mouth care are important. Avoid very spicy, acidic or rough foods if your mouth is sensitive, and tell your healthcare team about painful sores.
๐ฆ Increased risk of infection
Some chemotherapy can lower white blood cell counts. Wash your hands regularly, avoid close contact with people who are unwell and contact your oncology team urgently if you develop a fever or signs of infection.
๐ฉธ Anaemia & low blood counts
Regular blood tests help your oncology team monitor changes and determine whether treatment or additional support is needed.
๐๏ธ Numbness or tingling
Some chemotherapy drugs can cause peripheral neuropathy, particularly in the hands and feet. Report these symptoms early so your healthcare team can assess them.
๐ You don't have to simply โpush throughโ chemotherapy side effects. Many can be prevented, reduced or treated. Always tell your oncology team what you're experiencing โ even if it seems minor.
Never start supplements, herbal remedies or additional medicines during chemotherapy without discussing them with your oncology team, as some may interfere with treatment.
