World Cancer Day | 4 February

Today we pause to acknowledge every patient, family member, and caregiver affected by cancer — and especially those living with blood cancers.

Blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma are often invisible to the outside world, yet they profoundly affect the body, the immune system, and daily life. Behind every diagnosis is a person navigating uncertainty, courage, treatment, and hope.

As haematologists, we see not just the disease, but the resilience of our patients — those undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and long-term follow-up. We are continually inspired by their strength.

Every 27 seconds someone in the world is diagnosed with blood cancer or a blood disorder and in many instances, a stem cell transplant is the only chance of survival.

The chance of finding a perfect genetic match for a blood cancer patient is 1 in 100 000, as a matching donor needs to be someone whose relevant HLA characteristics (tissue characteristics) are ideally a 100 percent match with the patient.
