Help our children get to summer holiday camp

When you’re a child, it’s hard not to spend Christmas with your family.

This Christmas, 30 children at JCH will be staying with us over the holidays.

We want to give them something special: a few days at Camp Tholo filled with adventure, new friendships, campfire stories and memories they’ll treasure for years to come

Add The Johannesburg Children’s Home to your WOOLWORTHS My Difference Card as your chosen cause.

To our JCH family, friends, supporters and community, over the past year, something encouraging has happened. In August 2025, JCH had just 6 MyDifference supporters .

Today that number has grown to 33 supporters,

We are incredible grateful to everyone who has chosen to support us,

From 1 November 2026, JCH’s monthly MyDifference funding will no longer be guaranteed. Instead, it will be determined by the number of MyDifference members who have selected JCH as their chosen cause.

In simple terms:
More supporters= greater potential future funding for JCH

And that funding helps us continue creating a safe, nurturing environment where children can live, learn, grow and thrive.

We had the pleasure of welcoming the Hatfield Motor Group to The Johannesburg Children’s Home for a day of giving back, getting involved and spending time with our JCH community

The team generously donated toiletries, but their impact didn’t stop there. They rolled up their sleeves to help us plan vegetables and planets in our garden, contributing to something that will continue to grow long after the day is over.

In 1985, JCH didn’t just build cottages. It was building a different idea of what home could mean for a child in care.

The introduction of the cottage system marked an important shift in how children experienced care at The Johannesburg Children’s Home. For decades, children had experienced care within a more institutional environment. The introduction of the cottages created smaller, more personal living spaces, environments where children could experience a greater sense of belonging, community and everyday life.

The idea was simple, but significant:
Children needed more than a place to sleep. They needed a sense of home.

Today, those cottages remain an important part of JCH, spaces where children live, learn, build relationships and grow with the support of their caregivers.

Nearly four decades later, the cottages tell a story that goes beyond bricks and buildings. They reflect how our understanding of care has evolved, while reminding us that some things should never change: every child deserves to feel safe, supported and at home.

And perhaps that is what makes heritage so meaningful.
It isn’t only about looking back at what was built. It is about understanding the values behind it, and asking how we continue to build on them for the next generation.

Since 1892, The Johannesburg Children’s home has been a place of care, growth and opportunity for children in need. Over the years, JCH has evolved, but its heart remained the same: Creating a home where children can feel safe, supported and empowered to discover their potential.
