Before acupressure became something we know today, there was a history spanning thousands of years.

As someone who practices acupressure, I sometimes think we can become so focused on the treatment itself that we forget to ask:

Where did this actually begin?

The roots of modern acupressure can be found within the broader traditions of Chinese medicine, particularly practices involving the stimulation, pressing and manipulation of points on the body.

Long before modern wellness centers, treatment rooms and practitioners, Chinese medical traditions were developing ideas around qi (ζ°£), the body's vital energy, and pathways known as meridians or channels.

One of the earliest important medical texts connected with these traditions is the Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), compiled over centuries and generally dated to around the late Warring States and early Han periods.

It discussed health, illness, the body's internal systems and the use of stimulation of particular points on the body.

And this is where the history becomes particularly interesting.

Acupuncture and acupressure share much of this historical foundation - particularly the concept of stimulating specific points on the body.

Acupuncture uses needles.

Acupressure uses physical pressure, usually from the fingers, thumbs or hands.

Over centuries, these traditions developed and travelled, with related practices appearing in countries such as Japan and throughout East Asia.

Eventually, forms of these traditional practices made their way into the West, where they were adapted, studied and incorporated into what we now broadly call complementary and integrative health practices.

Of course, we need to be careful when talking about history.

Modern acupressure is not necessarily identical to what was practiced thousands of years ago.

The terminology, techniques and explanations have evolved over time, and some of the claims made about ancient practices today are interpretations rather than things we can prove from historical records.

But one thing is fascinating:

The idea of using touch and pressure as part of healing is certainly not new.

Thousands of years later, we still use our hands to stimulate points on the body, encourage relaxation and create a space where someone can pause, breathe and reconnect with themselves.

And perhaps that's one of the reasons I love acupressure.

There is something beautifully simple about it.

The hands.
The body.
The connection.
The pause.

Sometimes the oldest ideas are the ones that remind us how important it is to slow down and pay attention to the body in front of us.

And that, for me, is where the history of acupressure becomes more than just history.

It becomes a reminder that healing traditions have always been evolving - and so are we.

A Day at Meraki πŸ’™

Every day, people walk through our doors carrying something different.

Some arrive with pain that has kept them awake for weeks.
Some are carrying stress that has quietly built up over months.
Some are navigating life changes they never expected.
Some are simply looking for answers.

What they all have in common is this…

They've taken the hardest step.

They've shown up.

Today, one of our practitioners celebrated a patient's progress.

Another sat quietly and listened as someone shared a story they had never spoken out loud before.

Someone left smiling because they could move more freely than they had in months.

Someone else left knowing they finally had a plan.

Healing doesn't always happen in one appointment.

Sometimes it begins with feeling heard.
Sometimes it begins with understanding.
Sometimes it begins with hope.

At Meraki, every day reminds us that healing looks different for everyoneβ€”and that's okay.

Whatever you're carrying today, know that you don't have to carry it alone. πŸ’™
