Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR) affects 1/10 000 babies and describes the defect of abnormally connected veins to the heart 💔

The severe CHD requires immediate attention and sees the oxygen-rich blood flowing into the incorrect chamber and side of the heart, ultimately meaning those affected do not receive enough oxygen ❣️

World Blood Donor Day! 🩸

Today we celebrate the unseen heroes of so many wards in so many hospitals - blood donors.

🩸Your blood can save a minimum of 3 lives.
🩸38 000 blood donations are needed every single day.
🩸Your donated blood has a 42 day shelf life and a donation of one unit of blood will take you approximately 10 - 15 minutes.
🩸You can repeat your donation every 8 weeks.
🩸All we need for sufficient blood supply in SA is 3000 donated units every day.

❤️🫀 A small snippet of Kenzi’s CHD journey:

“My daughter Kenzi was diagnosed with transposition of the great arteries/vessels at my 23 week pregnancy scan at Wilgeheuwel Hospital. We were then transferred into the amazing hands of Dr Jeff Harrisburg at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital. With Dr Schurmann as the surgeon, our baby girl survived her switch operation in the middle of the worst Covid outbreak. 28 days in CTICU and 4 days in NICU. A week at home and then she caught RSV and we were back in Sunninghill for 4 days. Our happy beautiful girl owes her life to the amazing Doctors and nurses of Netcare Sunninghill Hospital.”
