Five8ths

Five8ths tailored shirts and accessories for men and women Seam allowance is the extra material cut in order to sew a seam.

The seam allowances on modern clothes tend to be smaller than five-eighths of an inch, which is just one of the many signs that quick, cheap construction is prioritized over details that make a difference in aesthetics, comfort, and durability. The seam allowance, a detail many people don't notice, might seem like an obscure choice for a brand name, but for us it represents an entirely different e

ra, when clothes were made, bought, and worn in ways that stand in stark contrast to the current era of fast fashion. At five8ths:

Each garment is handmade, one at a time, using fine sewing techniques. We consider it an art-form to construct and sculpt each piece. Fabrics are chosen with aesthetics, quality, and ecological impact in mind. Our fabrics consist mainly of cottons and linens from Italy, Japan, and South Africa. Each item is designed with thoughtfulness and attention to detail, with the goal of producing favored wardrobe staples. We prioritize fit in the design and construction process. Our standard sizes are made in small increments in order to provide a closer fit to a wider range of bodies. We also offer the option of bespoke sizing, in which a unique pattern is drafted to fit a specific individual.

Our workshop/retail space is closed until Friday, the 17th of April, however we are able to continue some production during the lockdown. I and two of our seamstresses have taken home all the equipment (sewing machine, iron, sleeve board, tailor's ham, iron, chair, etc.) needed to work on shirt orders from our homes. I will be continuing to work on patternmaking from home as well to be ready for fittings once they are able to resume. While we are not able to deliver finished shirts until after the lockdown, when retail and courier services return to full operation, we are trying as much as possible to minimize the interruption to our production schedule.

Although we are continuing some work, we take the threat of Covid-19 very seriously and are doing our part to limit its spread in South Africa. We commend the national government for implementing the lockdown. Even before the lockdown began, we have been doing everything possible to protect the health and safety of our staff, customers, and the country as a whole. Our shop has been closed to the public from Saturday 14th of March. In the week between the closing of the retail shop and the national lockdown we assisted staff members to get to work without taking public transport, and we practiced strict hygiene and social distancing measures within the workspace. We will continue to take great care both during and after the lockdown, as long as such precautions are necessary.

The contrasting brown button at the neck is a small style detail from this recent custom short-sleeve shirt. We keep white, black, and brown corozo buttons in stock, in multiple sizes and shapes. While corozo buttons are more expensive and harder to source than plastic, they are more than worth it to us. They are part of our conscious effort to replace plastics with natural materials wherever we can. And they look and feel beautiful. https://ift.tt/2IqY0jX

This fuscia (magenta?) fabric is made by Woodin in West Africa. I got it because it's one of those colors that some clients love but that is hard to find. The Italian and Japanese mills that we source from rarely have such bold colors. As you can see, this fabric has made a customer happy! The shirt has a simple style paired with the bold color. http://bit.ly/2TKkldv

This client asked for his initials to be embroidered in his own handwriting. We also found a thread color that matched the buttons almost perfectly. It's not easy to sew in someone else's handwriting, but we think we got it pretty close! http://bit.ly/2Bmmrc3

This shirt is made from a beautiful orange linen from . The fabric has a very relaxed drape, giving the shirt an almost boldly casual feel. To enhance this casual stylishness we chose bold 1970s style design details, such as the big pointed collar, neon orange thread, and a pocket flap with a point. The finished shirt is eye-catching and stylized, but not over the top. It perfectly fits the personality of the client it was made for. http://bit.ly/2DTzMdP

This is the eighth post in our series about the that we use in our work. The sleeve board and the tailor's ham are tools for pressing. They are used during the sewing process, to press seams as they are being sewn, as well as once the shirt is finished to give it a final pressing. The tailor's ham is like a rounded ironing board, and allows small rounded sections like collars and cuffs to be pressed while maintaining their contoured shape. The sleeve board allows the sleeve to be pressed without a crease. We think a nicely pressed sleeve with no crease is one of those little details that makes a stylish shirt stand out from the crowd. http://bit.ly/2SpPxRC

The fabric for this shirt is made by . The client's daughter brought it back for her as a present after a trip to the UK. We would normally use such a bold print for a short sleeve shirt, or perhaps a dress, but the client decided on a more fitted "formal" long sleeve shirt and we think the combination of the print with this cut works wonderfully. http://bit.ly/2CR6B9h
